PhD student in Astronomy (2)

Updated: 4 days ago
Deadline: 23 Apr 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-0964-24

at the Department of Astronomy . Closing date: 23 April 2024.

The Department of Astronomy, at Stockholm University, is one of the larger departments at the Faculty of Natural Science, with around 80 employees, out of which about 25 are PhD students. The main research areas are Galaxies, Supernovae, Computational astrophysics, Solar Physics and Planet and star formation.

Project description
Supernovae: One position is for a PhD student who will work with Prof. Jesper Sollerman on observations of supernovae. The underlying goal is to understand the explosion physics and progenitor stars of these explosions, and to constrain the final fates of the most massive stars. We are currently partners in the Zwicky Transient Facility project, and are actively preparing for the upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, for which we have full data rights.

Solar Physics: One position is for a PhD student who will work with Dr. Dan Kiselman and Prof. Jorrit Leenaarts on current problems in solar physics using observations with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma. The focus will be on the analysis of data from the advanced hyperspectral imaging instruments HeSP and MiHI. These are microlens-based 3D spectrographs of a kind that represent the future in observational solar physics and are planned for the European Solar Telescope (EST). Potential projects include searching for signatures of Alfvén waves in spicules shooting off the solar limb by measuring their magnetic fields and studying time-dependent formation of molecular spectral lines.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant for a studentship at a researcher level in astronomy must have completed 60 credits of non-overlapping courses in physics/astronomy at an advanced level. Of these, at least 30 credits should be in the form of independent work in astronomy, with a passing grade. The specific entry-level requirements can also be fulfilled through having equivalent documented competence.

The qualification requirements must be met before admisson to the research education.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates’ documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position.

Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at: www.su.se/rules and regulations .

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.

Please note that admission decisions cannot be appealed.
