The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as research and education within Life Science, smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 160 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.
Come and work with us!
The position will be at the Division of Electricity, at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Here you will find a friendly work environment with a large doctoral network and a variety of experimental projects. The Division of Electricity works in collaboration with Swedish companies - public and private - and stakeholders in the different fields of research. We look forward to receiving your application. Join us and build the future with us!
The Department of Electrical Engineering gives a salary supplement to the PhD Students at the department.
Project description
In our doctoral project, we focus on developing new system services for the future electric power grid. With the electric power grid rapidly transitioning towards 100% renewable energy production, the demand for new innovative system service design is increasing. The main purpose of the project is to develop system services for the electric power grid, such as voltage and frequency control. By designing the technical functionality and developing evaluation and compensation models, you will contribute to creating incentives to ensure an adequate supply of system services from various resources in the grid.
The energy sector is evolving, and this is your opportunity to be part of shaping it. By developing the system services of the future, you will play a pivotal role in enabling the transition to 100% renewable energy. The project is carried out in collaboration with other doctoral candidates, researchers, and our funding partners, creating a unique environment for you to acquire new knowledge and exchange ideas in the field of system services. You will be part of both national and international cooperation efforts aimed at creating a better future for generations to come.
Duties
- The main task for you as a doctoral candidate is to focus on your research education, which includes participation in research projects and doctoral courses. The courses correspond to 60 credits (ECTS), and the majority of the courses are elective and can be distributed over the entire duration of your doctoral studies.
- Conduct research within the project on future system services in electric power grids, including aspects related to frequency and voltage control.
- The project involves theoretical work in combination with model development and simulations to validate research results.
- Explore how digitalisation and flexibility can be used to optimize and manage system services.
- Communicate research findings through scientific articles and presentations at international conferences.
- Your responsibilities may also include involvement in teaching and other institutional tasks, with a maximum allocation of 20% of your working time.
Requirements
- The applicant must hold a master degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, energy systems engineering, and environmental engineering or similar.
- Security clearance must be possible to conduct to collaborate with security-classified Swedish authorities.
- Good oral and written proficiency in English and Swedish.
- We value your personal qualities, such as good teamwork and communication skills.
- You need to be determined, structured, and analytical, with an eye for problem-solving, and enjoy working towards set goals. We put great importance on your personal attributes.
Additional qualifications
- Knowledge in the field of control engineering.
- Knowledge in areas of electric power grid analysis or renewable energy production.
- Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink or equivalent.
