Updated: about 22 hours ago
Deadline: 06 Jul 2024

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Your work assignments

Repurposing biology for technology is one of the pathways for a sustainable future reducing synthetic waste and carbon emissions. The project’s main goal is to harness biological processes to enable living characteristics in technological systems. The PhD student will develop biohybrid living materials and devices based on photosynthetic organisms with responsive and evolving characteristics. The PhD student will develop methods for integrating photosynthetic organisms to materials systems/devices that have evolving electrical and mechanical properties and respond to physical or chemical stimuli.  The research has interdisciplinary character including material-device characterization, biochemistry and plant biology. The PhD student will work closely with collaborators specialized in chemistry and plant biology. The project is funded by Dr. Stavrinidou’s ERC-Starting Grant 4D-PhytoHybrid.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You should have graduated at Master’s level Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Bioelectronics, Applied Physics, Engineering or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in the above areas.  Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Research experience is considered of extra merit.

The applicant should be driven, creative, strongly self-motivated with excellent problem-solving abilities. The applicant should be able to work effectively both individually and together with other researchers in a multidisciplinary context. The applicant should have very good communication skills and very good knowledge of English both verbal and written.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability

Your workplace

The Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University is renowned for its world-leading research on bioelectronics, energy devices, printed electronics, and nanooptics based on organic materials and involving the coupling of ion and electron movement. Currently, the research staff of LOE includes over 150 researchers (professors, senior and junior scientists, and PhD students) and offers a dynamic multidisciplinary environment, see http://liu.se/loe .

The PhD student will work at the ePlants group of LOE led by Senior Associate Professor Eleni Stavrinidou.  The ePlants group is an interdisciplinary team passionate about plants and technology! The research is driven both by societal needs and scientific curiosity. One main research direction of the group is the development of bioelectronic technologies to enable new discoveries in plant science that can lead to more sustainable food production and to plants that can thrive in the changing climate. A second research direction focuses on gaining understanding on how to harness biological structures and processes for technological purposes with the aim to develop biohybrid systems and living materials for sustainable technologies with unique characteristics.
