Automated Quantitative Assessment of Tumor Burden and Lesion-Wise Analysis in Metastatic Cancer

We believe that you found your way here because of your deep interest in analysis of complex imaging data and creating algorithms for quantitative assessment. Could it also be that you naturally navigate new ideas, solutions, and data-driven analysis methods in your way of working? You would also find your place quickly in this collaborative research environment, with both well-established communication- as well as collaboration skills, which comes from your overall experience but also as a part of your character. If you can tick these boxes, you should continue reading.

The overall aim of this PhD research program is to improve the use of computed tomography (CT) images for detailed and quantitative assessments of disease characteristics, from baseline (pre-treatment) examinations and treatment response from follow-up examinations, in metastatic cancer. This will be achieved by the development of data-driven state-of-the-art image analysis techniques, including novel segmentation and image registration methods, applied on a combination of large-scale private and public datasets.

Welcome to Antaros Medical

At Antaros Medical, we combine ground-breaking imaging with profound experience in drug development and deep knowledge of disease mechanisms. We are specialized in cardiorenal & metabolic diseases and oncology. We have a global network of collaboration partners and customers, including both Big Pharma and Biotechs, and several European collaboration initiatives such as Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI) and COST.

Antaros Medical has delivered small complex mechanistic studies as well as multi-center clinical trials worldwide, utilizing our innovative imaging methods. Our global headquarter and imaging Corelab are based in Sweden, and we have recently opened a subsidiary in the US. PhD training at Uppsala University, Department of Surgical Sciences

The Department of Surgical Sciences – Radiology conducts research for development and application of imaging and functional diagnostic methods. The developed methods are used in everything from experimental animal research to clinical trials on patients and large-scale epidemiological studies on volunteers. The research subject is Radiology, and the research is distributed among several research groups.

In the Radiological Image Analysis research group, we have specialized in advanced image analysis methods for improved diagnosis and follow-up of patients affected by various types of cancer. The members of the group have a multidisciplinary background and competence to produce cutting-edge technical research with high clinical relevance.

Requirements and qualifications
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must:

  • Hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in an area relevant to the PhD topic or
  • Have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • Have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Fluency in spoken and written professional English is further essential, likewise is the ability to teach effectively in English or Swedish expected.

Proficiency in medical image processing, image registration, 3D visualization, programming, and mathematics is highly advantageous. As a person, we believe you have strong analytical skills and detail-orientation and that you thrive when embracing novel ideas and challenges. We would also discover quickly that you are a team-person, which is highly valuable to succeed in this field of research.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in rules and guidelines of Uppsala University.

A part of a national data-driven life science program

In the field of data-driven life science (DDLS), computational methods and artificial intelligence are used to study biological systems and processes at all levels, from molecular structures and cellular processes to human health and global ecosystems. The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS)  aims to recruit and train the next-generation of data-driven life scientists and to create globally leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with a total of 3.1 billion SEK (about 290 MUSD) over 12 years from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation.

During 2024 the DDLS Research School will be launched with the recruitment of 20 academic and 7 industrial PhD students. During the course of the DDLS program, more than 260 PhD students and 200 postdocs will be part of the Research School. The DDLS program has four strategic areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, epidemiology and biology of infection. For more information, please see: DDLS research school .

Within the framework of DDLS Research School, Antaros Medical is seeking a PhD candidate in data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics for a joint industrial-academic research project together with Uppsala University.

The future of life science is data-driven. Will you be part of that change? Then join us in this unique program!

Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics covers data integration, analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for patient stratification, discovery of biomarkers for disease risks, diagnostics, drug response assessment and monitoring of health. The precision medicine research is expected to make use of existing strong assets in Sweden and abroad, such as molecular data (e.g. omics), imaging, electronic health care records, longitudinal patient and population registries and biobanks.

Are you interested?

Warm welcome to apply with a cover letter and your CV included, no later than 9th June 2024.
