Updated: 4 months ago

The Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet provides undergraduate education for dental - , dental hygienist - and postgraduate students as well as master and doctoral studies. The Oral Diagnostics and Surgery Unit provides undergraduate training in oral biomedicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral radiology, and orofacial medicine.

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Oral Biology and Medicine group is led by Associate Professor Rachael Sugars at the Department of Dental Medicine. The group is interested in developing pathological diagnostics and understanding disease processes in the soft tissues of the oral cavity. Specifically, we are concerned with the complications that result following hematopoietic cell transplantation in the form of Graft versus Host Disease (GVHD). Studies are working to understand GVHD pathogenesis, clinical and diagnostic criteria and the search for predictive biomarkers.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The PhD student will work on studies focused on the clinical and pathological diagnostics of oral lesions, specifically within GVHD. The student will investigate the clinical presentation and pathology of mucosal and salivary GVHD and examine underlying disease mechanisms. The studies will include clinical evaluation of patients and the study of patient material. Methods will include clinical assessments and grading criteria along with cellular and molecular immunological techniques.
