| Description of research group and project The research group is headed by Linda Johansson and Anna Norrby-Teglund, and is one of 17 independent groups active at the Center for Infectious Medicine. The main research goal is to decipher mechanisms contributing to severe manifestations of acute bacterial infections and thereby identify targets for therapeutic intervention. The research is translational in nature and is based largely on clinical isolates, patient materials and human cell and 3D tissue model systems that mimic the clinical setting. Of particular interest are the two Gram-positive bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, both of which may cause highly aggressive invasive infections such as toxic shock, necrotizing pneumonia and necrotizing fasciitis that are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The research strives to decipher bacterial properties contributing to disease outcome and events underlying tissue injury. This project specifically aims to investigate the role of the patients´ own antibiotics, the so called antimicrobial peptide LL-37, in acute bacterial infections. Our research focus on host-pathogen interactions and the planned studies include among others bacteriology and cell culture work, advanced microscopy, as well as molecular biology. |

| Duties and responsibilities The Ph.D. student will learn and apply different techniques for cellular and molecular biology (immunostainings, live-cell imaging, western blot, ELISA, PCR etc.). The project involves experiments with human primary cells, including infection assays with S. pyogenes and S. aureus as well as experiments with antimicrobial peptides. The Ph.D. student will join all research-related activities such as group meetings, departmental seminars, national/international meetings, as well as standard laboratory routines of the group. |

Hold a Master´s (second-cycle) degree 2. Have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or 3. Have an otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad. Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral (third-cycle) education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria: -Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project -Analytical skills confirmed by scientific dissertation or the equivalent -Other documented knowledge/experience of potential significance to doctoral (third-cycle) education in the subject An overall assessment of the applicants´qualifications will be made. The vacancy will be filled on condition that the successful applicant is admitted to doctoral (third-cycle) education. The PhD project is planned to last four years.
