A doctoral student with doctoral grant in Cellbiology, Genome Integrity
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
Description of research group and project
Our research group works in the scientifically stimulating atmosphere of the department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Solna campus of KI. We are presently searching for a highly motivated doctoral student. The general interest of the research group is Genome Integrity. Specifically we want to know more about the Scc2 and Scc4 proteins, that link many of the essential cellular processes important for transfer of correct genetic information between cell generations. Scc2 and 4 are conserved proteins with similar functions from yeast to man. Scc2/4 is instrumental for the correct interactions between DNA and the three Structural Maintenance of Chromatin (SMC) complexes, Cohesin, Condensin and Smc5/6. Furthermore, Scc2/4 is involved in gene regulation. The involvement of Scc2 in human development is demonstrated by frequent mutations in the human SCC2 gene in patients diagnosed with the congenital developmental disease “Cornelia de Lange syndrome”. The intended PhD project aims at understanding the fundamental mechanisms for the function of the Scc2/4 protein complex and has the prospect to give us a deeper understanding of the important connections between processes as DNA replication, segregation and repair as well as transcription.
The focus of the project will be A) to determine the requirements for and the regulation of the DNA loading of the SMC complexes via Scc2/4 as well as to B) understand the gene regulation functions of Scc2/4.

Duties and responsibilities
The intended PhD project involves both in vitro and in vivo experiments using various model systems including yeast, human cell lines and mice. The student is supposed to be able to work on all parts of the project including design and execution of experiments, after suitable supervision. Experience from work with mice, cell culture and molecular biology methods as well as microscopy techniques are beneficial. The PhD candidate is expected to be able to work carefully and ambitiously in teams as well as independently. Both oral and written presentations in English are obligatory tasks. Teaching of Medical students will also be part of the responsibilities.
To be eligible, an applicant must
1. hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or
3. have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad.
Those who meet the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 HEC or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of July, 2015.
Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral (third-cycle) education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project
- Analytical skills confirmed by a scientific dissertation or the equivalent
- Other documented knowledge/experience of potential significance to doctoral (third-cycle) education in the subject
An overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications will be made.
Applicants should hold a degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biomedicine or equal. Knowledge/Experience in bioinformatics and statistics are desirable, good communication skills as well as proficiency in English are expected.
The vacancy will be filled on condition that the successful applicant is admitted to doctoral (third-cycle) education.
For further information on doctoral (third-cycle) education at Karolinska Institutet, see www.ki.se/doctoral.
Form of employment:
The first two years, the student receives doctoral student allowance which, after the half-time control, will be trasformed into a paid position as PhD-student. The PhD-studies cover a maximum period of the equivalence of four years full time studies. Regulations concerning graduate students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance, chapter 5, §§ 1-7.
