The AIM-NEXT project (www.aimnext.eu ) arises from the common need of European academyand industry to educate and train the next generation of experts in the field of Accelerate thesustainable design and Insertion of hard Materials tools and components, manufactured using
 non-critical raw materials, for Next generation EXTreme applications. To address this need, a unique training and research programme has been developed involving a selection of some of the best European Universities in the field together with Worldwide leading Industrial Organisations covering fundamental elements of the product value chain in key industrial sectors: mining, manufacturing and construction engineering.

We are now looking for 10 highly motivated Doctoral Candidates (DCs) to work towards their PhDs in one of the following research projects:

- Objectives: To explore the potential of the martensitic phase transformation e.g. TWIP or TRIP for rock drilling applications. This will be done by a combination of thermodynamic and kinetic modelling (ICME), experimental materials characterisation and testing approach.

- Expected results: Detailed knowledge of the mechanism of relevant phase transformations in the binder phase. A recipe for a new binder phase to be used alongside tungsten carbide.

- Objectives: To explore the potentiality of extrusion 3D printing of hard materials using Metal Injection Molding (MIM) feedstocks. A first goal will be to optimize printing parameters and to identify and understand the formation of defects during printing and their possible healing during the debinding and sintering steps in order to obtain dense final parts with optimized microstructure. A second goal will be to design customized parts and to determine the limitations in terms of size and shape of the parts for the different steps of printing/debinding/sintering.

- Expected results: (1) Development of complex-shape components with high density and controlled microstructure for standard WC-Co compositions. (2) Adaptation of the process to innovative hard materials grades.

Gross salary: € 36250 per annum (inclusive of 10% Deferred Payment Scheme*), plus mobility and family allowances as applicable and in line with EC rules for Marie Sklodowska Curie Doctoral Networks 2022

*Deferred Payment Scheme (DPS) is a requirement of our E6 Revenue approved share purchase scheme. All Element Six employees participate in a DPS payment of 10%, of their basic salary, which the Company pays in December of each year, or the employee can use to purchase Company Shares in Anglo American plc.

If an employee leaves the services of the Company prior to December, they will receive a pro-rata DPS calculated on basic salary earned during the current year.

- Objectives: To characterise the corrosion of hardmetal composites in highly corrosive condictions (high temperature, high acidic environments, high oxidant conditions) with electrochemical tecniques and surface analysis methods. Model the corrosion. Correlate the corrosion response with the composites’ composition and microstructure. Based on the investigation propose better compositions.

- Objectives: (1) Describe the sensitivity of static properties towards corrosive binder wear using pre-defined corrosion/oxidation states, (2) Link the corrosion/oxidation-state, testing frequency and binder composition with the fatigue life, (3) Understanding the interaction of binder corrosion/oxidation and mechanical stress is the basis for the development and qualification of Co-free binders.

- Expected results: Lifetime prediction model based on phenomenological relationships considers microstructure, corrosion/oxidation-state and static/cyclic load. The result is the fundament for a material design guideline, which allows the determination of use-case specific hardmetal materials for a given load scenario. for subsequent numerical analysis of extreme load cases.

- Objective : To develop a characterization framework for capturing the impact of tool material design (microstructure

variation, coating, post-treatment), its evolution over tooling lifetime and connect the collected data into a robust linkage

between properties and performance using novel and connect existing models.

- Expected results : (1) Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and multiphysics FE simulation tools for digitalization of materials, machining processes and material performance. (2) A knowledge-based pathway for design of recycled hardmetal tools by engaging full processing – structure – properties – performance chain of relations through a modern Digital Twin approach.

Qualifications

 

- Master of Sciences in Engineering with focus on Material Design & Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Applied & Technical Physics or equivalent within the research area, where the applicant has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 90 credits of relevance to the field, including at least 60 second-cycle credits.

- Proficiency in English (accredited: TOEFL, Cambridge University, or similar).

Skills

 

- Scientific and technical skills to work in a laboratory of machining process and materials characterization, scientific and technical knowledge of modelling and simualtion, dissemination and transferable skills necessary for the dissemination of the research results (good communication skills, oral and written), team work ability to integrate in a multidisciplinary and international work team, capacity to follow courses and workshops on scientific and complementary soft skills, readiness for international mobility and synergies with other research groups.

Salary

A starting salary of SEK 34300 per month plus mobility and family allowances as applicable and in line with the EC rules for Marie Sklodowska Curie Doctoral Networks 2022.

The starting salary is subject to raise stages as follows:

60 credits – SEK 1100

120 credits – SEK 1100

180 credits - SEK 600

For a doctoral degree - SEK 1500 (paid upon application by the doctoral student at the end of the month after the decision on the degree).

Benefits

The MSCA-DN programme offers a highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. The successful candidates will receive a salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for early stage researchers.

 

Exact salary will be confirmed upon offer and will be based on:

• Living Allowance of € 3400/month to be paid in currency of country where based and with a correction factor to be applied per country.

• Mobility allowance of € 600/month to be paid to all DCs recruited.

• Additionally, researchers may also qualify for a family allowance of € 660/month depending on family situation.

Taxation and Social Contribution deductions based on National and Institutional regulations will apply and will be deducted from the gross payment highlighted above.

In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes registration for a PhD degree; acquisition of advanced research and “industry-driven transferable” skills; intersectorial secondments; and active participation in interdisciplinary workshops, courses and specific events such as AIM-NEXT Summer Conference and Specialized Interest Seminars within International Conferences.


Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for recruitment, you must comply with the following requirements:

- Comply with the mobility rule. At the time of recruitment, the candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Short stays, such as holidays, are not considered.

- Fulfil the requirements to be able to enroll in a doctoral programme at the hosting institution/country.

- No PhD awarded. Applicants are not eligible if they have already been awarded a PhD

- Selected candidate must be willing to spend a prolonged time in another institute/country of the network during the PhD thesis period.

In most of the cases, additional requirements must be satisfied, particularly in terms of selection procedures based on local regulations and/or internationally recognized English language qualifications achieved. Regarding the former, some insititutions will request for degree and/or VISA recognition, before the interview date.

Selection process

AIMNEXT selection process will be organized in the following steps:

- Eligibility check: AIM-NEXT management office will check that each application is complete and that applicants fulfil the eligibility criteria described in section 3.

- Remote Evaluation: each eligible application will be assessed independently by the principal investigators and supervisors of its potential recruitment institution, together with other members of the local Recruitment Committee, as defined by national or local regulations. They will select at least three candidates per position to pass through to the following stage.

- Interviews: short-listed candidates will be invited for a virtual/on-line interview. Interviews will be conducted by multiple-member dedicated Selection Committees, appointed by Supervisory Board and in agreement wih national or local recruitment regulations, including at least two main supervisors of AIM-NEXT.

- Decision stage: a general discussion with all Main Supervisors will be conducted to share all interview impressions. A priority order list will be the outcome of this stage. In case two or more candidates are ranked as the best ones, position will be assigned on the basis of order of preference indicated by the candidate in her/his original application. In case of being necessary, a second interview could be conducted directly by the DC recruiter group. The second interview is open to be either virtually or in person at the recruiter’s discretion before to be decided for a final candidate.

- Notifications: AIM-NEXT Selection Committees will notify short-listed candidates of the outcome by e-mail as soon as possible after the decision stage.

- Recruitment: AIM-NEXT Supervisory Board will ensure a centralized, transparent and efficient recruitment process that adheres to the European Charter and Code for Researchers.
