Offer Description

Ammonite biostratigraphy of the Upper Jurassic condensed sequences of the Czorsztyn Unit, Pieniny Klippen Belt

Sedimentary record of the Upper Jurassic in the Pieniny Klippen Belt shows a lateral variation from the relatively continuous deep water radiolarites and nodular limestones to the strongly hiatal pelagic platfom deposits consisting of bedded to massive non-nodular and nodular limestones, and ammonite or ammonite-brachiopod coquinas. Ammonites are rather common in the platform successions, but their stratigraphic distribution is uneven due to rapid changes of lithofacies (and thus associated with changes in hydrodynamic energy, substrate firmness, and other ecological conditions). They often occur in condensed beds that were deposited under very slow sedimentation rate or were affected by submarine dissolution or sediment winnowing. To untangle the timing and the succession of these events (several events are often amalgamated into a single condensed level), the ammonites represents the main clue and the detailed ammonite biostratigraphy is absolutely necessary, in conjuction with microfacies analyses. The aim of this project is to revise the Late Jurassic ammonite biostratigraphy at several selected sections in the PKB. Many sections in the Czorsztyn Unit were already sampled for ammonites during the past projects (in Slovakia and Ukraine), however some additional fieldworks are still needed. For comparison, ammonite faunas from similarly condensed sections from Apennines and Sicily are also available in deposits of the department.
