Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) for PhD Studies
Application deadline: There are 2 admission points for SINGA per academic year - August and January intakes.
August admission: applications are open after the closing date of the previous intake to 1 January of the current year. (E.g., for August 2009 intake, application is open after the closing date of January 2009 intake to 1 January of 2009.)
January admission: applications are open after the closing date of the previous intake to 1 June of the previous year. (E.g., for January 2010 intake, application is open after the closing date of August 2009 intake to 1 June of 2009.)
The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is Singapore’s leading government agency dedicated to fostering world-class scientific research and talent for a vibrant knowledge-based economy. A*STAR actively nurtures public sector research and development in Biomedical Sciences, and Physical Sciences & Engineering, and spurs growth in Singapore's key economic clusters by providing human, intellectual and industrial capital to their partners in industry and the healthcare sector. A*STAR currently oversees 14 research institutes and seven consortia & centres; and supports extramural research with the universities, hospital research centres, and other local and international partners.The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) was first conceived to foster a vibrant and culturally diverse research community in Singapore. A joint collaboration between A*STAR, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the SINGA welcomes all international students to pursue a PhD education in Singapore. Under the SINGA, students will receive PhD training at their chosen lab at A*STAR Research Institutes or two of the top universities in Asia- NUS and NTU. Students will work in a multi-cultural environment, alongside distinguished and world-renowned researchers in state-of-the-art facilities. Singapore is the gateway to some of the fastest-growing economies in the Asia-Pacific region. With a PhD education in Singapore, students are well-positioned to establish global links that will take their research career to greater heights.
Research areas under the PhD Programme fall broadly under two categories:
(i) Biomedical Sciences; and
(ii) Physical Science and Engineering.

- Good reports from academic referees
- Full support for tuition fees for 4 years of PhD studies
- Attractive monthly stipend over 4 years of PhD studies, which can support you comfortably. The stipend amount is S$ 24,000 annually (equivalent to US$16,000*), to be increased to S$30,000 annually (equivalent to US$20,000) after passing the Qualifying Examination.
- One-time Airfare Grant of S$1,500 Return Airfare
- One-time S$1,000 Settling-in Allowance
*At exchange rate of US$ = S$1.50
