Offer Description

Work Plan: The student will develop work that explores the use of lock-free data structures to optimize the performance of various types of systems when subjected to high contention rates, in particular it is expected that the candidate will develop activities along the following lines:

• Explore the use of lock-free data structures in programming languages without automated memory management (i.e., garbage collection), through the study and development of a design for a high-performance lock-free memory allocator with built-in memory recovery.

• Study the possibility of designing and implementing a software sensor capable of measuring the amount of memory fragmentation of a program generated by its memory allocator.

• Explore the use of lock-free data structures in the context of real-time operating systems, to develop wait-free algorithms (which provide stronger properties than non-blocking algorithms, as they guarantee that operations finish in a limited number of computation steps) to be used in this context.

• Collaborate in research activities and NOVA LINCS as well as research projects hosted at the research center.

Workplace: The work will be developed at NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics, Departamento de Informática / Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor João Lourenço and co-supervision of Professor João Leitão.

Fellowship duration: The scholarship will last for 12 months, and may eventually be renewed.

Application deadline and form of submission: The competition is open from 07/03/2024 to 20/03/2024.

Documents to be provided when applying: Applications must be formalized by sending the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, letter of motivation, copy of qualifications certificate*, proof of enrolment in doctoral program**. How to submit applications: Applications should be sent by email to Professor João Leitão at the following email address: [email protected] and cc [email protected] , quoting the reference UIDP/04516/2020/BIM/14.

*In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to guarantee the application of the principle of equal treatment for candidates who hold foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to recognize these degrees and convert the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale. ** In the event that, at the time of application, candidates are not enrolled in a doctoral course, they must submit a sworn statement that they are eligible for enrolment in that same training offer and specific academic year, and at the contractualization stage they will be required to submit proof of enrolment. Documentation to be provided at the contractualization stage: Proof of enrolment in the doctoral program.

Applicable legislation and regulations: Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of August 27 (Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow) and amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of October 29, by Law No. 12 /2013 of 29 January, by Decree-Law No. 89/2013, of 9 July and Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt );
