The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto hereby opens this call for applications for a 1 (one) research studentship, for graduates enrolled in a master's or master's degree program enrolled in a nonacademic degree course, to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project “NET4SLEEP” (Ref. 0043_NET4SLEEP_2_E), financed by Interreg VI-A Espanã – Portugal (POCTEP), at the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision Making of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.

NOTICE OF for 1 (one) Research studentship, for the project ““NET4SLEEP” (refª 0043_NET4SLEEP_2_E), AT THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FMUP) - Pr. 194

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto hereby opens this call for applications for a 1 (one) research studentship, for graduates enrolled in a master's or master's degree program enrolled in a non-academic degree course, to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project “NET4SLEEP”(Ref. 0043_NET4SLEEP_2_E),financed by Interreg VI-A Espanã – Portugal (POCTEP), at the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision Making of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:

 

1. Research area: Medical Informatics.

 

2. Admission requirements:

To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:

Degree in Medical Informatics or related areas [1] ;

Be a student enrolled in a master's degree program in the area of Medical Informatics and/or in a non-degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units - requirement to be duly proven at the time of hiring2;

Not benefiting from a non-degree research grant for a cumulative period of 2 years, consecutive or interpolated - requirement applicable to bachelors OR masters eligible to enroll in a non-degree course.

 

3. Preferred requirements:

Experience and/or proven knowledge of database construction;

Experience and/or proven knowledge of programming languages;

Experience and/or knowledge of clinical decision support systems;

Proven experience in data analysis and clustering;

Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English.

 

4. Work Plan:

4.1. The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:

Review of scientific literature on clustering techniques in obstructive sleep apnea;

Analysis and characterization of clinical, demographic and anthropometric data;

Participation in the development and application of clustering techniques to clinical, demographic, anthropometric and polysomnographic data;

Participation in the development of a clinical decision support system for obstructive sleep apnea screening;

Support in the planning and execution of the project in technical, scientific and dissemination terms.

4.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the studentship contracts, the studentship may continue as long as the activities provided for in the work plan have not been completed and under the terms specifically provided for in the call for applications and in the contract, in accordance with Article 10(6) of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.

 

5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:

The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2.ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.

 

6. Workplace:

The work plan will be developed at the Department of Community Medicine, Health Information and Decision, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Daniela Ferreira Santos, Initial Level Doctoral Researcher at FMUP.

 

7. Duration:

The BI will last for 12 months, on an exclusive dedication basis, possibly renewable for an additional period of up to two years, when the scholarship has been awarded to students enrolled in a master's degree program, after a positive evaluation, up to the limit of the period of execution of the work plan or funding.

 

8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the scholarship is €990.98, in accordance with Annex I of the University of Porto's Research Scholarship Regulations, updated by Rectorial Order No. GR04/02/2024 of February 14, 2024, which changes the value of the University of Porto's research scholarships for the year 2024.

8.2. Payment will be made by FMUP by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.

8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.

 

9. Evaluation methods:

9.1. The selection methods are as follows: curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 80% and, optionally, complemented by an interview (ENT – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 20%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, in the intended manner, the real competences of the candidates or to distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed. If this is the case, the interview will be carried out with the 3 (three) candidates best classified in the AC.

9.2. Each member of the Jury will assess the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 100 points.

9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the curricular assessment (AC) are:

Proven experience and knowledge of database construction (30 points);

Proven experience in data analysis (30 points);

Experience and knowledge of applying clustering techniques (15 points);

Experience and knowledge of developing a clinical decision support system (15 points);

Knowledge of literature reviews (10 points).

9.4. The candidates who have scored 90 points or less will be excluded from the AC stage.

9.5. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should it be held:

Specific knowledge to carry out the job (60 points);

Interpersonal skills and relationships (15 points);

Communication and language skills (15 points);

Motivation for the activities (10 points).

9.6. The candidates may ask the President of the Jury to authorize their interview to be conducted by videoconference, stating the reasons for this.

9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, and applicants will be excluded from the competition.

9.8. The Final Classification (CF - abbreviation in Portuguese) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0,8*AC) + (0,2*ENT).

9.9. The candidates who have scored 75 points or less in the FC will be excluded from the competition.

9.10. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the profile required to fulfil the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the position.

1st effective member – Doctor Daniela Filipa Ferreira dos Santos, Entry-level Doctorate at FMUP;

2nd effective member – Doctor Matilde Filipa Monteiro Soares, Guest Assistant Professor at FMUP;

1st Substitute member – Doctor Cristina Maria Nogueira da Costa Santos, Full Professor at FMUP;

2nd Substitute member – Doctor Ricardo João Cruz Correia, Associate Professor at FMUP.

 

11. Submission of applications:

11.1. The candidates must be submitted by 16 of April 2024 (23:59 - Lisbon).

11.2. The candidates must be formalized using the online application submission system available on the FMUP website: https://sigarra.up.pt/fmup/pt/CNT_CAND_GERAL.CONCURSOS_LIST (Ref.2024/28, no.194).

11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:

Updated curriculum vitae in Portuguese or English, containing all the relevant information for assessing the candidate, as well as demonstrating compliance with the criteria set out in point 9.3 of this notice;

Motivation letter, indicating availability to start the work plan on June 1, 2024 (to be mentioned in the motivation letter);

Proof of enrollment in a cycle of studies or non-degree course or a sworn statement attesting that you meet the conditions for enrollment and that you will submit proof of enrollment by the time you are hired;

Declaration of eligibility (attached).

11.4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.

11.5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a) to d) of paragraph 11.3. will result in the application being excluded.

11.6. The documents must be attached directly to the application message, without links to external platforms/disks. In order to ensure that all documents can be read, the preferred saving format is "Portable Document Format" (.pdf). The files must be labelled with the name and surname of the applicant and must not exceed 5 MB in total. These files can be compressed into .zip format.

11.7. The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this, in the following terms:

the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice;

all applicants are informed that additional documentation has been requested.

 

12. False declarations:

False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.

 

13. Notification of results:

13.1. Applicants will be notified of the minutes relating to the application assessment phase(s) sent to them by email, to the address they provide for this purpose, with a receipt of delivery.

13.2. Notifications are made by email, under the terms of articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.

13.3. Under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to comment in writing.

 

14. Booking list:

A booking list will be drawn up on the basis of the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the first-placed candidate withdrawing. The Faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
