Offer Description

A tender is open for the attribution of one Research Scholarship for a 1st cycle student in Mathematics or related areas within the scope of the R&D Unit “Center for Mathematics and Applications” (CMA) (UI/297/2020), financed by “Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.”/MCTES (FCT, I.P.) (ref. UIDB/00297/2020) through national funds (PIDDAC) (OE), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area:

Mathematics or related areas.

2. Recipients profile/category:

Enrolment in a bachelors’ degree in mathematics or related areas.

Mandatory requirements:

Candidates must be regularly enrolled, in the academic year 2023/2024, in a 1st cycle in Mathematics or related areas in a Portuguese higher education institution. The documents that verify this situation must be presented, at most, by the time of the scholarship contract, being able to be replaced previously by a Declaration on honor.

Preferred factors:

Interest in applications to biology; programming skills in Python; Level of English B1 or equivalent, to be verified in an interview.

3. Work Plan:

The objective of this project is to select and train an undergraduate in rigorous and numerical studies of biological dynamics. The idea is to study scale effects in biological dynamics. It is a well-known fact that the result of biological dynamics can depend crucially on the size of the populations. Therefore, with the use of mathematical models, we will consider populations of different sizes, in partial isolation, such that the most likely outcome of evolution will be different in each case. From that, we will classify the critical size of the population such that the outcome of the evolution will be different and also the required level of isolation. The possible implications of this study are to provide a better understanding of the origins of biodiversity through the socalled allopatric speciation.

4. Applicable legislation and regulations:

Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of August 27 (Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow) and amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of October 29, by Law No. 12 /2013 of 29 January, by Decree-Law No. 89/2013, of 9 July and Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., in force (https://files.dre.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf ).
