Offer Description
Work Plan:
It is intended to evaluate the interactions between microplastic particles, mercury and the microbial community in an estuary, in order to better understand possible effects on the biogeochemical cycle of mercury and toxicity to aquatic organisms. Thus, the work plan includes a strong laboratory component and will comprise the following tasks: i) isolation, characterization and identification of microplastics and their associated microbial community; ii) assays in microcosmos systems; iii) analysis and quantification of mercury in the samples; iv) statistical data analysis; v) writing of scientific articles.
Workplace:
The work will be carried out at MARE NOVA, specifically at MARLab – Marine Research and Environmental Risk Lab, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (DCEA), NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA), under the scientific guidance of Doctor Neusa Loureiro Figueiredo Motubane and Professor Marta Susana Silvestre Gouveia Martins, being the contracting entity NOVA.id.FCT – FCT Association for Innovation and Development.
Fellowship duration:
The scholarship will last for 3 months, starting in May 2024.

Skills/Qualifications
Recipients profile/category:
i) Bachelor in Applied Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or Molecular Biology, and be enrolled in a non-academic degree course or in a Master course, to be proven at the time of contracting;
ii) experience in chemical analysis of polymers through Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR);
iii) experience working with microplastics;
iv) experience in microbiology;
v) strong motivation for scientific investigation;
vi) good work capacity and integration in a multidisciplinary team;
vii) good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Benefits
Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The amount of the scholarship corresponds to € 990,98, based on the table of values for scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country, payment being made monthly by bank transfer. Voluntary social insurance reimbursement is included in the scholarship contract.
Eligibility criteria
Selection criteria:
The selection methods to be used will be the following: A) curriculum evaluation (40%); B) laboratory experience and the techniques indicated in the requirements (40%); C) letter of motivation (20%). If the members of the Jury feels that it is necessary, the candidates will be subject to an interview, with the percentage weighting being 70% for the result obtained in criteria A to C (and the weighting is redistributed equally) and 30% for the interview.

Form of advertising/notification of results:
The evaluation results proposed by the jury will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list. After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or a hierarchical appeal, within 30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the address [email protected] .
