The Institute of Mechanical Engineering – IDMEC is opening a call for
Scientific Initiation Studentships
Applications are open for one (1) Scientific Initiation Studentship, within the framework of project, PE.699/24, financed by private funds, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Aerospace Engineering…………………………………………………………………………………
Admission Requirements:
Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries shall be registered by a Portuguese institution, according to the Decree-Law nr. 66/2018, of August, 16th, and the Ordinance nr. 33/2019, of January, 25th. It is mandatory to present the certificate to sign the contract. More information is available on: https://www.dges.gov.pt/pt/pagina/reconhecimento
Workplan and the objectives to achieve:
The work addresses the challenge of optimizing a Medium-Altitude, Medium-Endurance Fixed Wing UAS of a leading portuguese UAS manufacturer, using aerostructural high-fidelity computational tools. The goal is obtain a preliminary optimal aircraft design, simultaneously focusing on the wing aerodynamic shape and its internal structure, as a coupled aerostructural design, so a detailed solution can be studied and later prototyped and flight tested.
To meet the goals proposed, the work should be composed of the following main tasks:
- Bibliography Review: Literature research about aircraft optimal design, with focus on MAME fixed-wing UAS.
- Problem Definition: Definition of representative scenarios for typical aircraft missions. Identification of the performance metrics, mission constraints and design variables.
- Aerodynamic and Structural Optimization: Review of shape optimization and laminated thin-walled composite structures optimization techniques. Familiarization with existing computational tools by studying optimal solution using the legacy geometry as starting point.
- Aerostructural Optimization: Review of multidisciplinary design optimization and fluid-structure interaction techniques. Simple test case for familiarization with existing computational tools. Study of optimal solutions using the legacy geometry as starting point. Comparison with non-coupled solutions.
- Reporting: Write-up of the report and corresponding oral presentation support material. The different technical topics covered should be described in detail, and a rigorous presentation is expected.
Legislation and Regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nr. 40/2004, of August 18, as worded by Decree-Law nr. 123/2019, of August 28; IDMEC Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, available on (https://www.idmec.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/ )
Workplace: The work will developed at IDMEC - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, being both the Host and Contracting Entity, and under the scientific supervision of Prof. André Marta.
Duration: The research fellowships will have the duration of six (6) months. It is expected to begin in April 2024, and it is not renewable.
Conditions for fellowship renewing: The research fellowship is not renewable.
Monthly maintenance allowance: the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is € 601,12, being the payment method by Wire Transfer.
Selection methods: The selection method will be the following: Curriculum evaluation (weight 90%) and motivation letter (weight 10%), each worth 20 points.
Composition of the selection Jury: Prof. André Marta (president), Prof. João Oliveira and Prof. Frederico Afonso
Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will communicated to all applicants by email.
After being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal, by email.
Application deadline and formalization: The call is open in the period between March 20 and April 03, until 18:00, 2024.
Scientific Initiation Studentships
It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents: Curriculum Vitae; academic degree certificate, where applicable; proof of enrollment at an academic degree course (Master, Integrated Master); motivation letter; declaration on honour that the applicant does not exceed with this contract, including the possible renovations, an accumulated period of one year in this type of studentship, continuously or with interruptions, and has not held any other fellowship under the terms of the EBI.
Applications must be submitted to the email: [email protected]
