Offer Description
Work Plan: The work will involve (i) acquiring signals from biological samples; (ii) developing computational algorithms for signal preprocessing and processing; (iii) devising techniques for feature extraction and selection from the signals, applying clustering techniques and classification models using machine learning methods; (iv) documenting the produced computer scripts; (v) preparing reports and/or scientific articles on the work and the results obtained
Fellowship duration: The felowship will have a duration of 12 months, starting in 1 st of July 2024. The fellowship contract may eventually be renewed within the duration of the project.
Application deadline and form of application submission: Applications are open from 21th May 2024 to 4 th June 2024.

i) Motivation letter,
ii) Detailed curriculum vitae (including email address and telephone contact),
iii) Documents proving the academic degrees obtained and their classification
iv) Reference letter(s) and contacts (at least 1)
v) Up-to-date statement attesting to the candidate's professional status, with an indication of the nature of the bond, duties, and teaching hours in annual average, if applicable, which may be replaced by a declaration under honor, if not exercising any professional or service provision activity;
vi) Declaration of honor attesting to the commitment to enroll in a doctorate or a non-academic degree integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, if selected for the fellowship and accepted the award
Note: For academic degrees conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it is mandatory to submit the record of the recognition of the academic degree and the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese scale (process regulated by Decree-Law No. 341/2007, of 12 October), or alternatively, to obtain equivalence/recognition of academic degrees (process regulated by Decree-Law No. 283/83, of 21 June).

Recipients profile/category: MSc. in Biomedical Engineering
Mandatory requirements: This research grant is intended for candidates with a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering or related areas with experience in processing of time series and spectral signals acquired from clinical samples of human biofluids, experience in applying machine learning techniques to data of biological origin and excelent command of Python programming language. We are looking for a candidate with excellent team player skills, a passion for science and applied research, enthusiasm and experience in the field of biosensors and artificial olfaction.
Candidates must be enrolled in a doctorate, or in a course that does not lead to an academic degree as part of an educational project of a Portuguese Higher Education Institution. Documents proving this situation must be presented, at the latest, up to the stage of contracting the scholarship, and before that, they may be replaced by a declaration of honor.

Preferred factors: Involvement in research projects and teams will be viewed favorably, as well as a strong command of English language

Benefits
Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The amount of the scholarship corresponds to €1259.64, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (Valores do subsídio mensal de manutenção de bolsas atualizados a 1 de janeiro de 2024 (fct.pt)), and the payment is made monthly by bank transfer. If the fellowship holder wishes to apply to the voluntary social security, the contributions will be covered by the project.

Selection process
Selection criteria: The main criterion for the first ranking will be scientific merit (40%), the suitability of the candidate's profile for the project (30%), motivation and relevant professional experience for the development of the project (30%).
If justified, the three best candidates selected in the first series will be asked to conduct an interview, and then classified with a weighting of 50% (first ranking) and 50% (interview ranking).
All these criteria will be evaluated on a scale from 0 to 20 points.

Form of advertising/notification of results: The evaluation results proposed by the jury will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list. After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or an hierarchical appeal, within 30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the address [email protected] .
