PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project “Decoding the Landscape of Cancer Vulnerabilities in high-risk Cervical Carcinomas to detect new treatment strategies”, funded by The Norwegian Cancer Society..


About the project/work tasks:

The PhD candidate will be part of a research project funded by the Norwegian Cancer Society aiming to identify new treatment options for patients suffering from the most aggressive cervical cancer subtypes. The first objective will be to establish and characterize a cervical cancer organoid library from patient derived tissue. Next, a CRISPR-Cas12 screens will be applied to identify novel cancer genes. By targeted drug screen, drug candidates will be discovered. The sensitivity and specificity of potential treatment strategies will be further tested by functional knock-out studies in vitro and in PDX mice models at the Yale University, Connecticut, US.

Work tasks:

  • Establishment of 3D (organoid) cultures from patient derived tissue
  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • Molecular and genomic characterization of organoids
  • Genome-wide and minipool CRISPR-Cas screen
  • Targeted drug screen
  • Functional validation in vitro and in PDX mice models

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in biomedicine, molecular or cell biology, pharmacology, biotechnology, medical nanotechnology, medicine or equivalent.
  • Experience with relevant molecular biology or cell biology methods is required
  • Experience from cancer research is considered as positive
  • Basic knowledge within cancer genomics and programming will be considered as positive
  • Documented training - both theoretical and practical with research animals (e.g. LAS301) will be considered as positive
  • Experience in publishing scientific work will be considered as positive
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project
  • The applicant must be fluent in oral and written English, see documentation requirements

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
