At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of  Global Public Health and Primary Care (IGS), a full-time PhD position is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is funded by the University of Bergen (UiB) and is a part of the recently established Centre for Complex Conditions and Ageing (CC.AGE), financed by the Trond Mohn Foundation. CC.AGE is a part of the Centre for Elderly and Nursing Home Medicine (SEFAS), led by Professor Bettina S. Husebø. SEFAS has 15 employees and is growing rapidly with several new researcher positions. SEFAS has its offices at the Alrek Health Cluster with high focus on innovation, interprofessional collaboration, user involvement, and collaboration with industry partners. CC.AGE has close collaboration with the Department of Informatics, UiB; Centre for Nutrition, Department of Clinical Medicine, UiB, and Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting in Health (BCEPS), UiB.

CC.AGE started in February 2024 and aims to support older adults to live safely and independently at home by exploring and developing relevant technology. The centre will encompass 7 PhD and postdoctoral research fellows. This PhD position will be dedicated to evaluate if various sensors can provide valid information on health status in older adults with complex chronic conditions at home, in addition to develop and test digital psychological and social interventions for this target group. Moreover, the candidate will contribute with the execution of an RCT exploring if a digital platform will improve resource utilization and quality of life in home dwelling elderly persons with complex chronic conditions. The project is expected to produce results of high clinical relevance that qualify for publications in international renowned peer-reviewed scientific journals. • The PhD candidate will contribute to the development and conduction of the CC.AGE with emphasis on proof of concept (POC) testing of various sensors (e.g. Somnofy, Empatica and Garmin) in home dwelling elderly persons with complex chronic conditions.
• The PhD candidate will develop and test digital psychological and social health interventions for home dwelling elderly persons with complex chronic conditions in collaboration with Centre for research-based innovation on Mobile Mental Health (ForHelse).
• The PhD candidate will contribute to the execution of an RCT testing the effectiveness of a digital platform on rescource utilization and quality of life in home dwelling elderly persons with complex chronic conditions.
• The PhD candidate will manage and analyse data and disseminate the results in scientific journals and at conferences, in a general audience via media.
• The teaching part of the position will be affiliated with relevant tasks at SEFAS, IGS or at The Faculty of Medicine.

• The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in medicine, psychology, pharmacy or other relevant health professions
• The applicant must master Norwegian both in written and spoken, as it is required to communicate with clinical personnel and elderly patients
• Experience with the Norwegian health care service and elderly persons with complex chronic conditions is an advantage
• Experience with management and analysis of digital data is an advantage
• Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive
• The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
• Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

PhD positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
