PhD-position (4 years) at the Department of Clinical Science

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is part of the project “Pathogenesis of autoimmune Addison’s disease and polyendocrine syndromes – identifying pathologies and pathways for future treatment”, funded by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

Autoimmune diseases affect about 10% of the population and can involve almost any organ of the body. Like most autoimmune diseases, autoimmune Addison’s disease is multifactorial, with both genetic and environmental factors at play, and the exact mechanisms behind the disorders are still poorly understood.

In autoimmune Addison’s disease the adrenal cortex is destroyed by infiltrating immune cells leading to loss of endogenous cortisol production. We have recently described several genes implicated in autoimmune Addison’s disease, but to establish new diagnostic tools and treatments, we need in-depth information about the immune system in these patients.

This project is aimed to substantially advance our knowledge on how genetic variants translate into immune pathology leading to overt Addison’s disease. We will employ a multipronged approach using blood and tissue samples from carefully phenotyped and genotyped patients, cell models, and animal models.

We are interested in candidates that have an interest in multidisciplinary approach combining genetic and functional data as well as conducting immunological studies, with emphasis on autoantibody screening, biobanks, and animal models, with the aim to solve clinical problems.
