About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
This PhD position is a part of the recently awarded research project "Material and Structural Integrity Assessment for Safe Nordic Hydrogen Transportation Infrastructure (MatHias)" by the Nordic Energy Research. Within the MatHias project, there are five international research partners: SINTEF, NTNU, VTT, Uppsala University, and the University of Oulu. Additionally, several industrial partners from Norway, Finland, and Sweden are involved.
Hydrogen is widely recognized as a clean and efficient energy carrier, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future. The development of safe and efficient hydrogen energy transport technology is an indispensable component of the ongoing energy transition. Pipelines represent a natural choice for long-distance and efficient hydrogen transport, with most hydrogen pipelines being constructed from metals. However, a well-known but largely unsolved challenge associated with metallic materials is their degradation and loss of structural integrity upon exposure to hydrogen, a phenomenon referred to as hydrogen embrittlement. Over the past decades, NTNU has dedicated to multiscale modeling of hydrogen embrittlement and has recently developed a unique microvoid-based predictive framework for hydrogen embrittlement.
The objective of the PhD candidate is, in close collaboration with our partners, to develop a novel local hydrogen-induced failure
model/criterion, to implement the new failure model/criterion to the existing void-based predictive framework, and to verify the predictive power of the new model through comparisons with experimental results provided by the project partners.
