About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
There is an increased interest in membrane structures within the marine industry. Main applications include fish farms and floating solar (closed bag-type fish farms, lice skirt, floating membranes). Other applications are likely to appear, due to the potential of very low cost-to-benefit ratio. Despite this high potential, membrane structures have received little attention within research and development. State-of-the-art simulation tools lack the ability to model membrane structures in waves and current. Engineers are thus not able to perform reliable designs. Rational models are therefore needed, and the present PhD position work towards such developments. The PhD will study the coupled hydrodynamic-structural problem, with emphasis on the hydrodynamic part. The specific application will be decided between the student and supervisor. The work will include physical experiments, theoretical development, and implementation of numerical codes.
Your immediate leader is Head of department. The primary point of contact is the main supervisor.
Duties of the position
- take important courses the first year of the study
- plan, perform and analyse data from dedicated physical experiments
- develop possibly new theoretical formulations
- implement and apply numerical codes
- participate in supervision meetings on a bi-weekly, or similar, basis
- cooperate with other students and staff
- participate in relevant workshops and conferences
- publish peer-reviewed papers
Required selection criteria
- education within Marine technology, with a high level of marine hydrodynamics
- education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
- strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale . If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
- you must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
- good written and oral English skills
- good skills in Python, Matlab or similar programming languages
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
Preferred selection criteria
- work experience in marine engineering, preferably with marine membrane structures
- some experience in model testing and data analysis
- some experience with hydrodynamic software
- norwegian language skills
