About the job

The Centre for Geophysical Forecasting (CGF) at NTNU has a vacancy for a PhD position in the field of Earth Sensing. The CGF is a centre for research-driven innovation and is funded by the research council of Norway and industry partners. Our goal is to become a world-leading research and innovation hub for the geophysical sciences, creating innovative new products and services in earth sensing and forecasting domains. Novel use of geophysical sensing data is an important part of this research and will be applied here to improve our understanding of CO₂ migration and retention and in rock systems with contrasting tectonic stress states.

The overall research goal for this PhD position is to gain insights into the nature of long-term CO₂ migration and retention, by looking at natural CO₂ fluxes in a transect from the mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Norwegian continental margin. Using global and local earthquake detection networks supplemented by fibre-optic sensing of seismicity, the candidate will build seismic strain models for a transect from Iceland to Norway for the present period and compare this to the tectonic history of the region, using multi-scale assessments of CO₂ migration in stress-sensitive rock models. A major focus will be on statistical analysis of seismicity data from multiple detection systems (seismometers and FO cables). Other key research tasks include analysis of CO₂ emissions data from natural volcanic systems, including use of isotope and satellite data. Stress-sensitive flow models of CO₂ transport along faults and fractures and analysis of geomechanical datasets from planned CO₂ storage sites offshore Norway will be used to apply the insights gained from earth sensing datasets.

The immediate leader and supervisor is Professor Philip Ringrose.

Duties of the position

• The candidate will mainly work on innovative research in the field of long-term CO₂ migration and retention, resulting in at least two, ideally three, peer-reviewed Journal papers.
• The candidate will work at the CGF premises at NTNU in Trondheim as part of our team of leading researchers, interacting with industry partners and research institutes, and developing innovative concepts.
• The candidate will present ongoing research at key national and international seminars and conferences.

Required selection criteria

• Candidates must have a relevant background in earth science, with a good grounding in geophysics, remote sensing and data analysis.
• Candidates must have a Master’s degree in earth/planetary science or applied geoscience, and we will include students who expect to complete their Master degree studies by summer 2024.
• Applicants must satisfy the requirements for entering the PhD program at NTNU .
• The admission to PhD education at NTNU requires an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the last two years of the MSc degree, and C or higher for the BSc degree.
• MSc students who expect to complete their Master degree studies by summer 2024 are encouraged to apply. Employment will then start when the MSc degree is completed.
• Applicants who are not fluent in a Scandinavian language must document a thorough knowledge of English (equivalent to a TOEFL score of 600 or more).
• The CGF work with data that are subject to export control. The appointments are to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, PostDoc and research assistant.
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
• The position will be based in the Department of Electronic Systems, within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

• Candidates also need to show a keen interest in multidisciplinary scientific research and innovation.
• Some knowledge of geology, tectonics, geochemistry and remote sensing will be an advantage.
• Candidate should ideally demonstrate good written and oral English language skills.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
