About the position

For a PhD Candidate, the goal is to complete a doctoral education culminating in a doctoral degree.

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies has an opening for a PhD fellow in applied ethics. It is affiliated with the Practical Philosophy research group and the project Mission Mjøsa. This is a three-year position, with a possible extension to up to four years if compulsory work is included.

Mission Mjøsa  is a large-scale, interdisciplinary project co-led by NTNU and Innlandet county in partnership with municipalities around Lake Mjøsa and several government agencies. A team of researchers from a range of fields across technology, natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities are contributing to the project.

Mjøsa is one of the most biologically diverse freshwater lakes in Norway, and a source of drinking water for 100,000 people. Today, the environmental conditions in Mjøsa are good, but in the face of overlapping global climate, biodiversity, and food crises, there is a need to more fully understand and plan for a sustainable future for the lake and the surrounding watershed. To realize this objective, several PhD candidates with partly overlapping themes will work closely together across six research tracks: water, humans, technology, history, environment/surroundings, and a digital twin for modeling and future predictions.

This PhD position is especially associated with the research track environment/surroundings (omgivelsene), but will have a cross-cutting objective. The initial goal for the position will be to examine ethical aspects of the project Mission Mjøsa. The candidate will have the opportunity to more fully develop a project related to one of the following themes:

• Normative aspects of mission-oriented research and innovation – in general and in the way this is implemented in Mission Mjøsa
• Normative aspects of inter- and/or transdisciplinary approaches to sustainability
• Research-ethical challenges in inter- and/or transdisciplinary projects

Your immediate leader is Head of Department at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and the primary workplace is at Dragvoll campus in Trondheim.

Duties of the position

• Develop and carry out a PhD project on the theme Ethical aspects of the Mission Mjøsa project
• Participate in research meetings connected to the project and the research groups at the department
• Potentially teaching and supervision in association with departmental needs

Required selection criteria

• You must have a professionally relevant education in philosophy, or equivalent humanities or social sciences background
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education and the current position
• Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before the position commences
•  You must meet the requirements for admission to the PhD program in Historcal and Cultural Studies
• Excellent written and oral skills in English.
• Good written and oral skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years,with a possible extension to 4 years with 25 % teaching duties or other compulsory work. Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD program in Historical and Cultural Studies  within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. About the application
