The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders' Fellowships are offered annually by Massey University from the proceeds of a very generous endowment received in December 1991 from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Tokyo.
The purpose of the Programme is to provide opportunity to study at any New Zealand university for graduate students who have displayed high potential for future leadership in national, regional, and international affairs and in public life, as well as in private endeavour.
Fellowships are offered to outstanding students for study towards research in either a Masters or a Doctoral degree in a wide range of disciplines in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Business. Research proposals that are focused on contemporary issues and forward looking, with an interdisciplinary aspect, may be preferred.
In accordance with the terms of its endowment, the University is setting a very high standard. Candidates should have an excellent academic record, should have demonstrated a capacity for leadership and should be able to show a sense of commitment towards their proposed research topic.
Students may study at the New Zealand University judged most appropriate to the subject of his/her research. The Scholar's principal supervisor may, therefore, be from any New Zealand university.
The Fellowships will provide the recipient with a stipend of up to $25,000 per annum for a Doctoral student and up to $15,000 for a Masterate student. In addition to the emolument, the Fellowship covers registration and tuition fees and approved research expenses.
It is expected that up to three Fellowships will be awarded annually.
1. An applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand.
2. The Fellowship will be tenable for a period appropriate to the course of research study, but will not exceed three (3) years for Doctoral students and one (1) year for Masterate students.
3. Students may apply in anticipation of, or during, their postgraduate study, but note that there is only one round per year.
4. The Scholar will be expected to arrange for six monthly Supervisor/s reports to be submitted to the Chairperson of the Fellowship Committee and to inform the Chairperson of any significant developments in his/her research.
5. This Fellowship may not be held at the same time as another scholarship.
6. The scholarships are normally regarded as full-time, so positions of emolument may be undertaken only with the permission of the Committee.
7. Applicants must be of an age that they have not passed their 35th birthday by 1 October in the year of application.
8. Applicants must be intending to enrol or be enrolled in a degree with a research component of 75 points or 90 credits or more.
9. Applicants already holding a Doctoral degree are not eligible to apply.
10. Copies of all theses or research papers are to be deposited at Massey University.

Applications close 1 October in the year preceding that in which it is proposed to commence the programme of research or advanced study. The application must include:
(i) verified copies of transcripts of the applicant's academic record
(ii) the applicant's curriculum vitae
(iii) a statement of the proposed programme of research or advanced study, with an outline of the methods of investigation it is proposed to adopt
(iv) the names of two referees, one of whom can comment on the applicant's academic performance and one that can provide a character referee.
After consideration of the submissions, the Fellowships Committee may invite candidates to attend a personal interview, the costs for which will be covered by the Fellowship Fund. Candidates will be notified of the results of their applications as soon as practicable.
