How about attaining the degree you've always dreamed about, the one with no student loan at the end of it? Each year the Air Force sponsors selected candidates through their degree studies. This could be your ideal start if you're interested in Engineering, Logistics and Finance/Administration and would like a challenging and rewarding career. We'll pay your fees, give you a living allowance and offer you the chance to work during the holidays on an Air Force Base. Are you ready to Step Up?
WHAT YOU CAN STUDY?
RNZAF Officers require the qualities of leadership and discipline, combined with a requisite academic background in order to meet the managerial needs of the RNZAF. To gain sponsorship, approved degrees include, but are not limited to:
"Engineering Officer: Engineering Degree - majoring in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Mechatronics.
"Logistics and Human Resource Officers: Commerce, Business Management or Arts Degrees - majoring in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or Accounting.
"Aircrew Officers: Degrees in Aviation Management, Science or Commerce.

"Communications & Information Systems Officers: Degree to be confirmed.
THE SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT
Financial assistance is provided in the form or a suspensory loan. The loan covers:
"Full tuition fees for approved courses
"Texts and specialist instruments to the sum of $900* per year
"Accommodation and Living Allowance to the sum of $9545* per year
* Before tax. Sponsorship amounts are reviewed annually.
HOW TO GET SELECTED
If you satisfy the criteria for applying, you'll need to attend an interview with one of our Recruiting Officers where we will discuss your application in full. You'll also be asked to complete a medical and security questionnaire. Suitable candidates will be required to attend an Officer and Aircrew Selection Board (OASB) for up to four days at our expense, during which time you'll need to demonstrate your suitability as an Officer.
Here you'll do team and leadership exercises, more interviews and possibly a medical to show us if you've got what it takes to be an Officer. If you're recommended at the end of the four days you'll be given a full medical examination before returning home.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
After graduation from University you'll be able to start your Air Force fulltime career and transfer from the Territorial Force to the Regular Force on a standard 15 year engagement. (Please note the engagements may differ for Specialist Officers). You will begin by undergoing Initial Officer Training.
INITIAL OFFICER TRAINING COURSE
First you'll complete 22 weeks of Initial Officer training at RNZAF Base Woodbourne. You will be exposed to various subjects and find out if you've got what it takes to be in the Air Force!
The following are just some of the subject areas covered on Initial Officer training:
"RNZAF customs, drill and parades
"Military law
"Military field skills and weapons training
"Defence and Strategic Studies
"Communication skills
"Command, Leadership and Management
Your suspensory loan is repaid by way of commissioned service in the Regular Force of the RNZAF. On successful completion of Initial Officer Training the amount decreases on a daily basis over a period of service comprising one year for each year of sponsorship plus one year. (e.g. A three year degree incurs a four year Return of Service).
If you leave the RNZAF before that period is served, your loan is reduced by the time you have served. If you do not complete your degree, are discharged from the TAF, decline an Offer of Service in the Regular Force or fail to complete Initial Officer Training, you will be required to repay the total amount of your loan.
COMMAND TRAINING
Your training and development doesn't stop after Initial Officer Training however! As part of your ongoing personal and professional development you will also have the opportunity to complete further modules in Command Management and Command Leadership, as well as Service Writing and Service Discipline. These short, yet 'punchy' modules, are completed as part of your individual career progression, and are a prerequisite for promotion beyond the rank of Flight Lieutenant. The modules are residential and are conducted at RNZAF Base Woodbourne.
LIFE IN THE AIR FORCE
If you thought life in the Air Force was all about starched uniforms and saluting, think again. And it's not just about flying aircraft either. There are over 30 different careers in today's Air Force, all with great benefits. You'll get paid while you train, you'll never be stuck doing the same thing day after day, and you'll get the chance to travel. Accommodation is cheap. Medical and dental facilities are available on all bases. Don't get us wrong, a career in the Air Force takes dedication and commitment. But it's not all work, work, work. You can play sport and have a great social life, and best of all, you get to make heaps of great mates along the way.
THE SKY'S THE LIMIT
The opportunity to fly even higher in the Air Force is always open. Once your degree is completed you will begin progressing through the ranks to Flight Lieutenant. As your career progresses opportunities also exist to be come a Squadron Leader or higher, determined by a Promotion Board.
