1.0 Preamble
1.1Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated acknowledges that education is the key to personal, whanau, hapu and iwi development. For this reason the board has allocated funds ($40,000) to support Ngati Kahungunu tertiary students’ educational achievement.
1.2The Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board has identified three strategic areas of priority for academic research, scholarship, and internship in 2012.
? Te Reo and Tikanga Maori
? Fisheries and Resource Management/Environmental Science
? Health & Wellbeing
? Information and Communication Technology
These strategic areas support the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Vision 2026 and Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated strategic direction and operations.
2.0Purpose
2.1To provide financial benefits and work experience to Ngati Kahungunu tertiary students. To encourage and recognise the pursuit of academic excellence, knowledge and qualifications by Ngati Kahungunu tauira. To support the realisation of the Ngati Kahungunu Strategic Vision 2026, and develop the capacity and capability of the Ngati Kahungunu workforce for future generations.
3.0General Scholarships
3.1General Scholarships are funded from a pool of $15,000. The minimum amount awarded is $500, up to a maximum of 30 scholarships.
3.2If the number of applicants exceed the funding available applicants will be ranked on the basis of academic merit with priority given to applicants studying in areas that support Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated strategic direction as indicated above.
4.0Research Scholarships
4.1Three Research Scholarships ($5000) are offered to full-time Ngati Kahungunu tertiary post-graduate students undertaking research.
4.2Priority is given to students undertaking research projects within one of the areas of strategic interest to Ngati Kahungunu (as indicated above).
4.3In the event that insufficient suitable applications are received in the disciplines above, applications from students undertaking research in areas in which Maori are underrepresented may also be considered. This includes (but is not limited to): Science (Physical and Chemical Science, Mathematics and Statistics), Architecture and Design, physiology, medicine, physiotherapy, Engineering. The decision of Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated as to what constitutes an area under represented by Maori is final.
4.4ALL applicants will be judged on the basis of academic merit. Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated reserves the right not to award any Scholarships (or a reduced number of scholarships) if it is deemed that insufficient suitable applicants have applied.
4.5Students who are unsuccessful in obtaining a Research Scholarship will automatically be considered for a General Scholarship and do not have to supply both a Research Scholarship and General Scholarship application.
4.6Successful applicants will receive half of their scholarship immediately and will receive the final payment after giving a presentation of their research at the Ngati Kahungunu AGM on November 26th 2011.
4.7Successful applicants are invited to provide Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated with an electronic copy of their thesis.
5.0Internships
5.1Internships may also be available this year, providing the opportunity for Ngati Kahungunu student’s to join the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office. Interns will participate in research and work relevant to their studies and skills and contribute to iwi development.
5.2If you would like to be considered for an internship (should these be available), please ensure you indicate your interest on your application form.
6.0Process
6.1The final decision is made by Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated staff members and endorsed by the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board with no right of appeal.
6.2Applicants cannot receive both a general and research scholarship in the same year.
6.3The following criteria must be met to be considered eligible for a scholarship:
6.3.1Of Ngati Kahungunu descent and registered on the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated - Iwi Registration Database;
6.3.2Currently enrolled at a tertiary institution as a full-time student in their third or final year of completing their degree; or to be considered for a Research Scholarship you must be doing post-graduate study;
6.3.3Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office has received a correctly filled in application form by the stated deadline. The onus is on the applicant to supply all the required information and material; including a named passport sized photo.
6.3.4If successful, a letter of acknowledgement must be sent to Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated within 2 weeks of receipt of scholarship. Research Scholarship recipients are also expected to attend the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated AGM, 24 November 2012.
7.0Timeframes
7.1Applications will open on the 8th February 2012 and the scholarships will be advertised via panui ki te iwi, Te Reo Irirangi O Ngati Kahungunu and on the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated website.
7.2The closing date and time for receipt of applications will be at 4pm, Friday 11 April.
7.3All applications will be received by the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated office and a report including recommendations will be submitted to the Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board for ratification at their next meeting following the closing date.
7.4All applicants will be informed of the decision by 30th June 2012.
7.5Approved scholarship recipients will need to respond to appropriate staff at Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated within 2 weeks of notification.
All students must be a tangata whenua registered member on the iwi registration database.
