In 1939, when New Zealand joined forces with the allies, Maori men and women volunteered and made a significant contribution in all areas of the defence forces and home services. Notable among them were recruits who formed the 28th (Maori) Battalion. On 19th July 2007 the Hon Parekura Horomia announced a new suite of Ngarimu VC and 28th (Maori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships. The new scholarships have an increased putea which reflect the value of the successful applicant's study, and their past and future contribution.Purpose of award
To provide assistance to Maori students undertaking study in a course that encourages and promotes the maintenance of Maori language, Maori history, Maori tradition and/or Maori culture.Selection criteria
All applicants must be:
* New Zealand Ma-ori
* studying at a registered New Zealand tertiary institution or at an overseas tertiary institution that meets its own country's accreditation requirements. This is not necessary for Manakura scholarship applicants only
* able to show characteristics of the ideal applicant as detailed in the application form
* able to describe their contribution to wha-nau, hapu- or iwi following successful completion of their study, and
* agree to present milestone reports to the Nga-rimu VC and 28th Ma-ori Battalion Board.
Additionally, Masters, Doctoral and Manakura applicants must:
* be able to show the link between Ma-ori and the outcome or benefit of their study or work. The applicant needs to share their passion for their chosen area of study with the Nga-rimu VC and 28th (Ma-ori) Battalion Board
* submit a brief about their study or field. This brief will be assessed against the criteria listed under Characteristics of the ideal applicant (see below), and
* describe their contribution to wha-nau, hapu- or iwi following successful completion of their study.Number of awards offered

Applicants are shortlisted to attend interviews in September/August, All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications by end of November. Payments are made in accordance with milestone periods agreed between the Ministry of Education and scholarship recipients.What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Continuation of the scholarship is dependant on satisfactory progress.Additional information
