History or background of award
In 1939, when New Zealand joined forces with the allies, Māori men and women volunteered and made a significant contribution in all areas of the defence forces and home services. Notable among them were recruits who formed the 28th (Māori) Battalion. On 19th July 2007 the Hon Parekura Horomia announced a new suite of Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships. The new scholarships have an increased putea which reflect the value of the successful applicant's study, and their past and future contribution.
