This award arises from a fund established in 2001 as a memorial to Murray Richards, an Associate Professor in the former Department of Horticulture at Massey University.
1.The bursary shall be called the Murray Richards Bursary and shall be awarded annually.
2.The value of the bursary shall be determined each year from the interest earned on the capital fund and shall be a payment towards the recipient's tuition fees.
3.Applicants will have embarked, in the year of the award, on a course of undergraduate or postgraduate study in horticulture at the Palmerston North campus, Massey University. Preference will, however, be given to postgraduate study.
4.The bursary shall be awarded annually by the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee in consultation with at least one academic staff member from the Horticultural area.
5.In making a recommendation for this award the Committee shall take into account other scholarships, bursaries and awards held by the candidates, with a view to achieving a fair distribution of monies among qualifying candidates.
6.If there are no applicants of sufficient merit the Selection Committee may refrain from making an award.
7.At the discretion of the University, the annual interest may be reinvested to maintain the value of the capital fund, in which case no bursary shall be awarded in that year.
8.The University may vary the regulations at its own discretion if it deems it necessary, provided that the essential purposes of the bursary are fulfilled as far as possible.
