History or background of award
This Scholarship was established through the Victoria University Foundation in 1994 by the Wellington Historical and Early Settlers' Association Inc in memory of its then President, the Rt Reverend James E Worsfold

Purpose of award
To encourage research into the early history of the Wellington region.

Selection criteria
Candidates must be studying for a Masters degree or Doctor of Philosophy relating to the history of the Wellington region between 1830 and 1900.

How do students apply?
* Applications for the Scholarship must be lodged with the Scholarships Officer of Victoria University of Wellington by 1 June.
* Applicants are required to submit:
(a) a completed application form for Victoria University of Wellington Scholarships;
(b) a detailed description of the research topic to be undertaken;
(c) a supporting statement from the supervisor of the thesis.

Decision makers
The Selection Committee for the Scholarship shall consist of the Convener of the Scholarships Committee, or a nominee, and the Chairperson of the History Department or a nominee; and a representative of the Donor, the Wellington Historical and Early Settlers' Association.

How and when do students learn of the decision?

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
It is a condition of the Scholarship that the student shall be required to give an address to the Wellington Historical and Early Settlers' Association on the subject of the thesis. This address will usually be given in June the year after the Scholarship is made. Applicants who are unsure of their availability should raise this issue when applying.
