New Investigator PhD Scholarship for 2024

The Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ) and Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand are pleased to confirm their partnership and commitment to awarding a doctoral scholarship to a New Zealand applicant demonstrating outstanding merit in blood cancer or blood cancer related disorders.

PhD Research Priorities

This year, Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand and HSANZ will award one PhD scholarship to a successful applicant whose work aligns with at least one of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand following research priorities:

  • Research that addresses unmet health and/or diagnostic needs, including quality and service delivery, in the field of haemato-oncology in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Research that addresses the needs of Māori with haemato-oncology conditions

The Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand and HSANZ PhD Scholarship will:

  • Provide total funding of no more than $130,000 AUD comprising a stipend of $42,000 per annum including a consumable budget of up to $3,000 per annum and final payment of $4,000 on receipt of final report
  • Continue to fund each PhD Scholarship awarded until completion of the PhD for no more than three years of full-time study
  • Be dependent on submission of the required annual report to HSANZ and Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand
  • Eligibility

    • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand, eligible to be enrolled full time in an approved course of post-graduate study or research in a New Zealand University.
    • Able to start the PhD in 2024 or have started in 2023
    • Willing to present their work as an abstract or oral presentation at the annual Scientific Meeting Blood or HSANZ meeting on at least one occasion throughout their Scholarship
    • Willing to participate in publicity and promotional activity organised by Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand
    • A member of the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand
    • Applicants may only receive one PhD scholarship or Clinical Fellowship from the HSANZ during their lifetime
    • Recipients may not use this Scholarship in conjunction with any other scholarship, whether from HSANZ or any other benefactor, Government or otherwise
