History or background of award
This scholarship was established in 1988 by the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women (Inc) to encourage advanced University study by women.
Purpose of award
To encourage University study at honours level by women.
The scholarship shall be awarded annually by the Academic Board to the candidate who:
(a) is deemed worthy of the award, and
(b) would have been the next female in order of merit to be offered a VUW Graduate Award if sufficient funds had been available.
If there is no suitable female candidate, the scholarship may be awarded to a male candidate who satisfies the criteria laid down in regulation 3(a) and who would have been the next male in order of merit to be offered a VUW Graduate Award if sufficient funds had been available.

How do students apply?
No application - applicants must apply for a Victoria Graduate Award. The awards are allocated to the next female students on the list for a Victoria Graduate Award after the recipients for a Victoria Graduate Award have been selected.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The scholarship may be held concurrently with any other Bursary or Scholarship, expect for the Victoria Graduate Award, provided that the rules of the other awards allow this.
