Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award

History or background of award
This award is offered in partnership with the Wallace Arts Trust ( www.wallaceartstrust.org.nz) as part the annual Wallace Art Awards, the longest surviving and largest annual art awards of their kind in New Zealand which aim to support, promote and expose New Zealand contemporary art and artists.
The residency will run in either the (American) Spring or Summer of each year, with the recipient based at the Headlands Center for the Arts ( www.headlands.org) in Sausalito, California.

Purpose of award
The Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award is for an outstanding mid-career or senior New Zealand visual artist to undertake a three-month residency at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California. One award valued at over US$30,000 is granted each year, towards a three months artist residency.

Selection criteria
To be eligible, you must:
* have a suitable background in the visual arts. The minimum qualification is a Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent artistic or professional achievement;
* have a specific project on which you propose to work on during the residency;
* not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants ( fulbright.state.gov); and
* meet the citizenship requirements for this award.
Citizenship requirements
You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
* are a New Zealand citizen;
* and are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US;
* and are not currently living in the US.
Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the US. (ie. have not studied, taught, researched or worked in the US for a period aggregating more than nine months/one academic year during the past five years)

Apply to enter the Wallace Art Awards, the entry form for which may be found on The James Wallace Arts Trust website - www.wallaceartstrust.org.nz
Short-listed applicants must then Complete the application form available on our website and send it with the requested support documents.

Decision makers
A Selection Committee comprised of representatives from Fulbright New Zealand and the James Wallace Arts Trust. Final selection is confirmed by the Board of Fulbright New Zealand and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (USA).

How and when do students learn of the decision?
You will be advised of the outcome of your application by the end of August.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
* If selected, you will be required to undertake a full medical examination;
* US immigration documentation must be completed from within New Zealand;
* International travel will only be funded between New Zealand and San Francisco, California. Award winners will need to make their own way to Sausalito using their remaining stipend;
* In keeping with US immigration requirements and the philosophy of the Fulbright Programme, you will be required to return to New Zealand for a minimum of two years before becoming eligible for permanent residency in the US;
* Whilst at Headlands you will be expected to:
- implement your artistic project as articulated in the application;
- enhance the profile and development of New Zealand visual arts; and
- develop and extend professional links with artists and artistic networks.
* On returning from the US you will be expected to have completed, or substantially completed, a body of artwork and should be able to demonstrate other tangible benefits to New Zealand visual arts;
* A final and signed report, using the standard Fulbright New Zealand format, must be provided within six weeks of completion of the residency. This report will be an important resource for Fulbright New Zealand and The James Wallace Arts Trust and will help to build a picture of what is being achieved over time with the residency programme;
* A separate report must be submitted to the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the Fulbright agency that administers Fulbright Scholar awards in the US.

* Accomodation at Headlands Center of the Arts for the duration of the residency (three months);
* A private artist's studio at Headlands for the duration of the residency;
