Fulbright New Zealand Scholar Awards

History or background of award
Fulbright New Zealand was established in 1948 by Treaty between the governments of NZ & the US to promote international understanding by the establishment of educational and cultural exchanges.

Purpose of award
Fulbright Visiting Scholar Awards in New Zealand Studies are for New Zealand academics to conduct research and teach a course in New Zealand Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Two awards one per semester valued at up to US$32,500 plus travel are granted each year, towards one semester of research and teaching.

Selection criteria
To be eligible, you must:
* have a PhD and recent teaching experience at a New Zealand tertiary educational institution;
* be able to teach an undergraduate course in New Zealand Studies (maximum of three hours class contact per week) based on your field of expertise;
* not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants ( fulbright.state.gov); and
* meet the citizenship requirements for this award.
Citizenship requirements
You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
* are a New Zealand citizen;
* and are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US;
* and are not currently living in the US.
Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the US. (ie. have not studied, taught, researched or worked in the US for a period aggregating more than nine months/one academic year during the past five years)

Decision makers
A Selection Committee comprised of representatives from Fulbright New Zealand. Final selection is confirmed by the Board of Fulbright New Zealand and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (USA).

How and when do students learn of the decision?
You will be advised of the outcome of your application within eight weeks of the closing date.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
* You must plan to be in the US for a minimum of three months;
* Your award term must fall within the period between 1 December in the year of application and 31 December of the year following application;
* You will need to provide Fulbright New Zealand with evidence of financial support (or not) from your home institution, and will be required to undertake a full medical examination;
* You must travel on a New Zealand passport, and US immigration documentation must be completed from within New Zealand;
* International travel will only be funded between New Zealand and the US;
* In keeping with US immigration requirements and the philosophy of the Fulbright Programme, you will be required to return to New Zealand for a minimum of two years before becoming eligible for permanent residency in the US.

These awards are available for research in any field. Visiting Scholars are required to teach an undergraduate course for Georgetown University's Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies (CANZ) ( canz.georgetown.edu) as part of their award.
The Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies is pleased to make appointments from the full range of academic disciplines in the field of New Zealand studies, including history, sociology, education, geography, literature, business or trade, international relations, international economics, public policy and management, and government.
There is one award available per semester. Applicants are welcome to apply for awards for two concurrent semesters. Semesters run from January to May (Spring) and August to December (Fall).
VALUE:
Entitlement
* International travel of US$2,000 for the grantee and US$2,000 for one dependent;
* Stipend of US$3,250 per month for partial awards or US $6,500 per month for the duration of each semester (five months)*;
* Basic supplemental health and accident insurance up to US$100,000;
* The opportunity to participate in various programmes and activities available to Fulbright scholars in the US.
