Asia:NZ offers three David Holborow Memorial Scholarships annually for undergraduate study at New Zealand tertiary institutions. The scholarships were established in memory of David Holborow, a former New Zealand ambassador to Korea and a director of the Institute of International Affairs (1990-1994). Mr Holborow founded the Korean Studies Programme in 1992 to enhance New Zealanders’ understanding of Korea. Asia New Zealand has continued this major education and cultural programme and set up the awards seven years ago.
Students in the following categories are eligible to apply
New Zealand secondary school students of Korean descent about to start undergraduate studies
New Zealand tertiary students of Korean descent currently studying at undergraduate level
New Zealand students who are descendants of a New Zealand Korea War veteran who are about to start studying, or are currently studying at undergraduate level
Requirements for New Zealand students who are descendants of a New Zealand Korea War veteran -
Applicants must demonstrate their relationship to a veteran who served with New Zealand forces in Korea (1950-1957), or a New Zealand citizen who served with other United Nations forces in Korea (1950-1957).
Requirements for NZ students who are of Korean descent
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or have permanent residency in New Zealand and be eligible to undertake full-time tertiary study in 2011. They must have studied for at least two years in a New Zealand secondary school. Applicants must demonstrate their Korean family background, usually parent(s), grandparent(s) or great grandparent(s).
Requirements for All categories
Applicants must intend to study full-time at a New Zealand tertiary institution in the year following their application.
Selection
Selection criteria include academic ability, all-round achievements, community involvement and application essay. Information from the candidate's completed application and referee report will be taken into account by the selection panel.
