The Ter Meulen Fund (TMF) promotes medical, biochemical and biological research in the field of paediatric medicine. It awards stipends and grants to researchers working at a Dutch university or institute who wish to conduct research abroad. The aim is to gain knowledge that can then be applied in the Netherlands.

Funding is awarded in such areas as developmental biology, molecular biology, microbiology, pharmacology, clinical paediatrics, paediatric neurology and child psychology/psychiatry.

The Fund was established in 1982 and is named after the paediatrician H.C.E. ter Meulen, who bequeathed his estate to the Fund.

What does it cover?

The Fund makes stipends available for a six to twelve months period. Grants are meant to cover a researcher’s travel and accommodation costs. The Fund also subsidises one to six months working visits abroad. These allow researchers to learn new techniques that they can then introduce in the Netherlands.

The Fund finances an annual paediatric session and lecture at the Conference of the Netherlands Association of Paediatric Medicine. The session and lecture are given by a renowned researcher.
