Department Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS)
Work location Groningen
Apply no later than 30 August 2021
Working environment
The research at the Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS) at the UMC Groningen focusses on understanding basic functions and processes of the cell & systems and how they lead to diseases if disturbed. The Department strives for identification and, if possible, exploitation of targets to prevent or cure disease, and to promote Healthy Aging. The position will part of an NWO-funded project on “Guardians of protein disorder” coordinated by Prof. Dr. L.M.Veenhoff and that involves multiple partners in- and outside the UMCG.
Job description
While control of disorder of proteins plays a crucial role in the physiology of cells, we do not understand how cells guard the transitions between different phases of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), liquid, gel or amyloid. A striking finding in recent years is that nuclear transport factors can protect against toxicity from disease-related IDPs. Vice versa, chaperones have been found to act on nuclear transport. With a consortium of experts on the nuclear pore complex, chaperones and aggregation pathology, we aim to elucidate how nuclear transport receptors and chaperones act as guardians of IDPs to ensure proper nuclear pore complex function and to protect against pathological aggregation. With this consortium, we are in a unique position to make a crucial step forward as we can address the problem through a complementary set of in silico, in vitro, and in vivo approaches. The knowledge obtained is expected to be vital to the understanding of neurodegenerative diseases caused by IDPs.
What do we need
A postdoc with a PhD degree in molecular cell biology, preferably with experience in stem cell biology and differentiation (iPSC technology). We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher with a strong drive and affinity for curiosity-driven science. You are expected to independently conduct a research project and collaborate with other scientists within the consortium. You are a team player, highly motivated, self-driven, and have a high level of written and spoken English.
What do we offer
A research project aimed at impact at the highest international level.
Mentoring, supervision and training.
Access to state-of-the art infrastructure
A stimulating international research environment.
A position for 3 years (first 1 year and after positive evaluation the contract will be extended with 2 years)
The conditions of employment meet the Collective Labor Agreement of Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).
The position is scaled in scale 10, with a maximum gross salary of € 4.615 per month, depending upon your qualifications and experience and based on a full-time appointment. Additionally, the salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
How to apply
Full applications including a resume and a motivation letter will receive consideration if received before August 30, 2021. You can only apply using the digital application form at the UMCG website and upload the relevant documents. Applications using the indicated email-address will not be processed.
