Title: Millimeter wave CMOS circuit design for waveguide integrated amplifier arrays for 5G communication systems

The PhD candidate will work at the Department of Electrical Engineering (https://www.tue.nl/en/university/departments/electrical-engineering/ ). Within the Department of Electrical Engineering at TU/e, research and education is done in the areas of Telecommunication, Signal processing, and energy transfer. This project is part of the prestigious Dutch VIDI personal grant of Dr. Rob Maaskant. The interdisciplinary PhD will be positioned in the Mixed-signal Microelectronics (MsM) group and will collaborate with the Electromagnetics (EM) group who coordinates the project. In both groups, the topic of 5G and beyond 5G communication systems is researched by a strong team of staff members and PhD students. Both groups are part of the Center for Wireless Technology Eindhoven (CWTe) and have access to extensive RF and millimeter wave measurement facilities, both for on-chip as well as for antenna characterization.
In this PhD project you will perform research on spatially distributed millimeter-wave integrated circuits in advanced CMOS processes and on-chip electromagnetic wave structures for 5G and beyond 5G communication systems. The chip designs will be combined and measured in a 5G antenna demonstrator system that is currently being developed by a PhD student in the Electromagnetics group at Eindhoven University of Technology.

We are looking for candidates with a thorough interest in CMOS circuit & Electromagnetics co-integration on-chip at mm-wave frequencies, with:
- Master degree in Electrical Engineering
- Experience in CMOS integrated circuit design
- Relevant courses on microwave engineering/millimeter wave technology
- Knowledge and experience of relevant CAD tools (Cadence flow) and IC design methodologies supplemented ideally by EM design tools (e.g. CST, HFSS)
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and in writing
- Willingness to start as soon as possible (no later than January 2018)
Conditions of employment
We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 4 years. The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a Ph.D. degree. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. A salary is offered starting at € 2222.-per month (gross) in the first year, increasing up to € 2840.- per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover, an 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
