PhD Position in Hybrid Wind Tunnel Testing of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines Aerodynamics and Aeroelasticity

Floating offshore wind turbines are widely regarded as a key technology to accelerate renewable power generation and reach climate targets. Installing a wind turbine on a floating structure comes with opportunities as well as new engineering challenges. Due to the floating motions, the rotor is subject to complex aerodynamics not yet fully understood. Lab-scale experiments in the field are scarse but highly relevant for capturing these phenomena and update numerical design tools. In response, HybridLab project (https://hybridlabs.tudelft.nl) was launched aiming at accelerating innovations in offshore renewables through hybrid labs.

Within this framework, we are looking for highly skilled and motivated candidates to join our Floating Offshore Wind Energy group and pursue the following PhD project:

- Hybrid Wind Tunnel Testing of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines Aerodynamics and Aeroelasticity.

The project focuses on the experimental investigation of floating offshore wind turbines aerodynamics and aeroelasticity. A highly instrumented 3-blade wind turbine scale aeroelastic model will be designed to be coupled with a hexapod and integrated in a hybrid testing setup. The setup will be tested in multiple wind laboratories to study the detailed aerodynamic loads, power, and structural deformations of the rotor when subjected to floating motions.

In addition, due to the highly multidisciplinary nature of this PhD project, your research will contribute to and benefit from others and you will work in teams with other PhDs and staff from this and other institutions within the broad HybridLabs framework.

  • MSc. degree in wind energy, aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field
  • Fundamental knowledge of wind turbines and aerodynamics
  • Knowledge of mechanical design, systems and control is a plus
  • Affinity with data processing techniques and programming
  • Hands on with lab-work and hardware construction
  • Experience with wind tunnel testing is a plus
  • Attitude to teamwork and excellent communication skills in spoken and written English, combined with demonstrated creativity, self-learning skills and an inclination towards research.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year.
