The Dutch Research Counsel (NWO) has recently granted a subsidy to a consortium of researchers to carry out the so-called CAREFREE (Creating A healthieR Environment for FutuRE patiEnts) project. The project leader is Prof. Dr. Nicole D. Bouvy from the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC). The composition of the consortium can be viewed on this NWO webpage . We are looking for a PhD student who wants to strengthen this team.

The general aim of this project is to determine how the organization of patient care in the hospital can be optimally adjusted to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. The project will involve a detailed multidisciplinary analysis of the entire environmental impact of what is necessary to perform a general surgical procedure (specifically, the removal of the gallbladder through a laparoscopic procedure). At the same time, we will explore what adaptations could (or should) be made to minimize the environmental impact of this procedure. This includes assessing the spaces, materials, and medications required for the operation, as well as considering medical ethical choices (is the surgery necessary?) and potential behavioral adjustments by patients and physicians that can contribute to reducing the CO2 footprint of this complex process. A multidisciplinary team of PhDs and postdocs will collaborate on this project.

The work package of the PhD student involves creating a comprehensive mass balance of the medications used in such an operation. This includes anesthesia agents, muscle relaxants, and antibiotics, among others. It is not only important to quantify the CO2 footprint of the incoming materials but also to assess the potential environmental impact of medication residues that through the patient's urine or the disposal of medication, via the hospital sewage and waste water treatment plant, ultimately reach the surface waters. Methods will need to be developed to measure the concentrations of these medications or residues at various locations.

We are seeking responses from a PhD candidate with an affinity for this issue and a master in (bio)medicine, pharmacy, or environmental/aquatic toxicology. The candidate should possess strong communication skills because collaboration will take place with various parties in different hospitals and institutions (e.g., water authorities). Therefore, being proficient in the Dutch language or willing to learn the Dutch language as well as having solid knowledge of pharmacology and chemical analytical techniques is highly recommended.

As PhD-candidateat Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile Promovendus, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2770,00 and €3539,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
