Offer Description

The PhD student position is funded by the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds and focuses on the role of complement in the development of immune-mediated neuropathies in collaboration with Erasmus MC and UMC Utrecht. We aim to unravel the overarching role of complement function in different immune-mediated neuropathies including multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN), Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) to facilitate the development of rational and improved treatment strategies that target antibody and complement function.

Together with our UMC Utrecht-Argenx team, you will analyse the binding patterns of IgG and IgM anti-ganglioside antibodies from MMN, GBS, and CIDP patient sera to different neuronal cells, and investigate the role of complement activation in these diseases. Furthermore, in collaboration with the team at Erasmus MC, you will conduct an in-depth genetic analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with expression and function of complement proteins and regulators, and build a disease prediction model. You will write a PhD thesis (based on scientific publications) and follow courses at the Graduate school for Infection and Immunity.
