Offer Description

Are you interested in researching the best ways to translate and communicate motor control insights outside academia? And do you want to collaborate internationally and work towards your doctorate while impacting clinical practice and rehabilitation? Then join the Behavioural Science Institute as a PhD candidate!

In this position, you will focus on the translation of basic research results in the field of motor control and learning into meaningful tools for clinical assessment and therapeutic practice to enhance rehabilitation of developmental, acquired, and age-related disorders of the sensorimotor system. Key research questions include: How can we integrate the requirements and needs of different stakeholders (clinicians, patients, caregivers, etc.) into the development of novel assessment tools and therapies in translational research? How can novel insights in motor control and learning be best translated and communicated to stakeholders outside of academia? How can we best exploit the development of novel techniques and methods for clinical practice and therefore enhance innovation capacity? Methodologies include in-depth interviews and thematic co-creation sessions during which researchers, clinicians and ‘end-users’ will discuss and develop tailor-made, evidence-based intervention programmes. Subsequently, a three-round Delphi study will be conducted which will form the basis of the ‘translation toolboxes’ to be developed.

Your tasks will include working on the topics of implementation science and knowledge translation research in the field of motor control involving persons with functional neurological disorders. Together with your team of supervisors you will organise the knowledge translation aspect of the whole TReND project, including in-depth interviews, co-creation sessions, and a Delphi study, culminating in the development of translation toolboxes. The research results will be communicated and disseminated to different target audiences and sectors (e.g., research, clinical and industry) and will be published in well ranked international journals and at highly recognised international conferences. You will collaborate with an international consortium in the externally funded MSCA doctoral network TReND and participate in the network’s training programme including in-person events (e.g., summer schools) and online events (e.g. lecture series, colloquia). The position includes working towards a doctorate.

Profile
  • You have a Master’s degree in Implementation Science, Human Movement Science, Biomedical Science, Kinesiology, Design Science, or a related discipline.
  • You have proven experience in the translation of basic research for clinical use.
  • You are a team player, have good communication and organisational skills, and an interest in the translation of basic research results into clinical practice.
  • The MSCA mobility rule applies: you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the date of recruitment (1 September 2024). Furthermore, you should not yet have acquired a doctoral degree.
  • You have good command of written and spoken English and Dutch (or are willing to learn Dutch). You are willing to stay at our network partner at Kings College (London) for 2 months.
  • You are willing to travel to different international network events.

We are

The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) is an interdisciplinary research institute where fundamental, applied and translational research takes place, often with the aim of understanding important societal issues and contributing to their solutions. BSI is one of the three research institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, communication science, and pedagogical and educational science. Our mission for the upcoming years is to join forces in interdisciplinary research on the theme ’Empowering the Young’. We study the challenges that young people face in our current society and contribute to their empowerment.

BSI performs high-quality research with scientific and societal impact. To foster this, the institute provides excellent research facilities and has strong collaborations with non-academic partners. Moreover, BSI is known for its successful graduate school and strong dedication to open science and team science. We stand for a warm, inclusive and cooperative research environment in which our staff are well-supported in a work culture that promotes collaboration and respect.

By joining the EU-funded Doctoral Network TReND, you will become part of an interdisciplinary and intersectoral training network involving six beneficiaries, two employing associated partners, and several associated partners. The network will provide online and in-person training to support the researchers in obtaining their doctorate degree (including two secondments to consortium partners).
