Leiden University has available:
Four staff positions in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry research.
To be affiliated with the recently created Leiden Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry (LCBMC). The available staff positions comprise one full professorship and three tenure track positions.
Chemical biology research provides rational, chemical solutions for biological problems, and as such bridges between chemistry and biological and biomedical research disciplines. To be able to obtain physiologically relevant data, life science researchers are faced with the challenge to address increasingly complicated biological questions within model systems of an increasingly complicated nature. There is a pressing need to understand fundamental biological processes at the molecular level and to relate this understanding to the overall functioning of the organism. Leiden University has created the ‘Leiden Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry’ (LCBMC) research platform in which these challenges are met by the integration of high quality research in synthetic bioorganic chemistry, protein chemistry and molecular biotechnology in an interdisciplinary research program supported by state-of-the-art analytical and spectroscopic expertise and instrumentation. The LCBMC is hosted by the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC) and provides a fundamental basis for applications in biomedical research (drug/diagnostics development, pathological research). The LCBMC has strong ties with the biomedical research institutes at Leiden University (Leiden Amsterdam Centre for Drug Research, Leiden University Medical Centre), within the ‘Medical Delta’ (Erasmus Medical Centre), with the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam and with the Dutch Cancer Institute (NKI).
We are looking for enthusiastic and excellent researchers with a Ph.D. degree and several years of experience at the tenure track or full professor level and who are dedicated to developing an appealing research program. Candidates with an interest in chemical biology research in the broadest sense, and who share our interest in applying methodology fundamentally rooted in chemistry to biological phenomena are invited to apply. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the LIC teaching program at BSc and MSc levels and to contribute to management and organization of our Institute. They have a strong background in one of the chemical disciplines that contribute to chemical biology research: (bio)organic chemistry, biochemistry and/or analytical chemistry. They also have a proven track record in applying their chemical expertise in biology research. Examples of research profiles can be found on the website of LIC (www.lic.leidenuniv.nl / lic.leidenuniv.nl/en/news/four-staff-positions-in-chemical-biology-and-medicinal-chemistry) Familiarity with the Dutch language is not required.
Conditions of employment
We offer a clear and inviting career path in a tenure-track contract. The track consists of a temporary appointment for a period of six years maximum and is, pending a satisfactory performance review, expected to lead to a promotion to a tenured position as associate professor. Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package and the opportunity for ‘personalized’ benefits. LIC actively supports her employees in maintaining or creating a healthy work-life balance. We are committed to accommodate the presence of female talent in top staff positions within our organization. We aim to fulfill at least one of our current tenure track openings with a female candidate and therefore strongly encourage woman to apply.
