PhD student in Antenna Design and Prototyping Using Additive Manufacturing

Updated: 4 months ago
Deadline: ;

This is an a Luxembourg National Research Found project that intends to build the future of the SnT and Luxembourg's antennas and propagation industry by researching, designing, simulating, prototyping, and measuring metamaterial antennas and RF components applied to the satellite antenna segment using AM&M techniques.

For this, project will be composed of two key pillars: The first comprises researching different metamaterial antennas and RF components like gap-waveguide, metasurfaces, metalenses, and metamaterial phase arrays, to reduce the complexity in the satellite antenna segment in the K-band compared to conventional designs. The complexity reduction comprises compacting the number of antenna and RF sections and connectors. The second involves researching the most suitable AM&M techniques to prototype metamaterial antennas and RF components, to highly reduce the weight of the antenna satellite segment, maintaining the same performance as conventional scenarios.

The AM techniques may include Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Melting (SLM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and for the metallization, Physical Vapor Deposition (PDV), Chemical Vapor Deposition CDV, Water Transfer Printing (WTP), Spray Painting (SP), electroplating, and electroless plating.

The challenges for the prototype requirements comprise integrating all the metamaterial antenna sections, ideally in a single element, which can be successfully manufactured using additive manufacturing with the required resolution to generate cavities, pins, holes, and grooves.

The successful candidate will work under the academic supervision of Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas, and Dr. Juan-Andrés Vásquez-Peralvo and join a strong and motivated research team.
