Project Overview

The current efforts in healthcare systems are not enough to achieve the environmental goals set by the EU Green Deal. This has significant impacts on society, the economy, and people's health. One reason for this is that many people don't fully understand the problem or the solutions. It's also complicated to decide which approach to take—should we prioritize low cost, low carbon, better care, or positive social impact? The healthcare system doesn't invest enough in teaching, policies, or research for sustainability. While some solutions work well in specific areas, they aren't effective for making big, lasting changes.

To address this, a project called KitNewCare is focusing on kidney care as a test case. Kidney care uses a lot of resources and has clear treatment paths. KitNewCare has a group of experts in kidney care, environmental assessment, education, economics, and data management. They will study the sustainability of different clinical centers across the EU, finding areas where improvements are needed. They will also develop tools, guidelines, and recommendations to make healthcare more sustainable. People who use healthcare services and the public will be involved in the project's design and decisions. This project aims to help healthcare providers and decision makers reduce pollution, carbon emissions, and waste.

Post Summary

The aim of this is post is to contribute to the understanding of sustainable healthcare practices and their impact, facilitating informed decision-making and driving positive changes in the field. This includes applying a 4-impact factor Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to create an EU-wide map of sustainability hotspots in Kidney Care, encompassing health outcomes, environmental impact, social impact, and cost. The role involves collaborating with partners, leveraging the map and database for further research, and disseminating findings for broader adoption.

NOTE: Applicants must have been resident in an EU member state for 3 out of the last 5 years to be eligible for EU fees.
