Offer Description
Magnetic materials represent today one of the most interesting and applied classes of materials. From magnetic data storage to quantum computing, and from magnetic coolers to spintronics and magnetic imaging, magnetic materials span the range of almost all technological applications. Furthermore, molecular magnetism has become a multidisciplinary, dynamic field of science at the interface of inorganic chemistry / physics / materials science, for which a breadth of potential applications can be envisioned.
This doctoral research project targets the synthesis and full characterisation of molecule-based and polymeric metal-organic framework materials displaying magnetocaloric properties, i.e. change their temperature upon employment of varying external magnetic fields. The selected Doctoral Candidate will be hired by the University of Crete and will be based at the Department of Chemistry. There will also be secondments with experienced MolCal partners at: CSIC in Zaragoza (Spain; M. Evangelisti) for participating in caloric experiments, The University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom; E. Brechin) for exploring synthetic procedures for grafting, the University of Seville (Spain; V. Franco) for participating in magnetization experiments, and Quantum Design, Inc. (United States; R. K. Dumas) for experiments on magnetocaloric materials.
