Offer Description
We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.
We are looking for a new doctoral candidate (PhD student) to join us in the project “Pulsed excitation of RCs, transient field distributions, experimental and simulative approach”.
The objective of this position is to develop a model to predict the average and maximum field strength amplitude and its time derivative that will act onto a certain device under test, via simulation of transient fields inside the working volume and close to the (planar) boundaries of a reverberation chamber (RC). Efficient field simulation methods based on plane-wave approaches or raytracing methods and the statistic distributions of field quantities of general validity for the time and frequency domain and different loading conditions are expected.
The position is part of the newly established Marie S. Curie doctoral network NEPIT, “Network for Evaluation of Propagation and Interference Training”, with collaboration partners in Netherlands, Poland, Italy and Germany. The successful applicant is expected to write a PhD thesis based on this work, which will be supported accordingly from our side.
Your primary responsibilities:
- Theoretical and experimental investigation of transient electromagnetic fields in a reverberation chamber
- To develop efficient field simulation methods based on plane-wave approaches or raytracing methods
- To determine the statistic distributions of field quantities
- To validate the models against measurements and experiment in three reverberation chambers of different size
- Secondment and collaboration with an industrial partner (Rohde&Schwarz)
- Cooperation with our collaborators and researchers within the doctoral network

Skills/Qualifications
Requirements profile:
- MSc degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, physics or a related discipline with excellent result to be eligible as PhD student.
- Proven track record in working with physical problems and numerical methods.
- A strong interest in electromagnetics and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Coding experience in Python/MATLAB/Octave or in the context of numerical modelling is highly desirable.
- Fluent command of written and spoken English is required.
- You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before your recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
- You must be at the date of recruitment a doctoral candidate (i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree). Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.

Gross salary without employer´s social contribution and without family allowance:
The employee’s gross salary will be approximately 3269 € per month (without family allowance) or approximately 3816 € per month (with family allowance), depending on the year of employment and the choice of health insurance. A family allowance will be paid in case the researcher has a family. ‘Family’ means persons linked to the researcher by marriage (or a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised) or dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher.
