PhD student position in Environmental AMR (f/m/d)

At the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), Climate-Sensitive Infectious Diseases lab, there is a 100 % position available from 01.06.2024, initially limited to 3 years:

PhD student position in Environmental AMR (f/m/d)

Analysing drivers and barriers to the spread in aquatic and terrestrial environments

Tasks:

  • Conduct an AI-driven systematic review to comprehensively analyze the current state of AMR in the environment
  • Perform a detailed analyses to identify patterns of AMR in surveillance data from wastewater treatment plants
  • Conduct an analysis of the AMR prevalence and trends in animals
  • Provide support for the collection and analysis of human AMR cases together with other relevant environmental factors
  • Undertake a comprehensive spatio-temporal analysis to examine the impact of microplastics on the spread of AMR in aquatic environments
  • Take the lead in developing indicators for an integrated AMR One Health surveillance approach, with a focus on incorporating environmental factors

Profile:

  • Master’s degree in Life Science, Data Science, or Public Health, preferably with cross-disciplinary experience in at least two of them
  • Proven ability to use R or Python
  • Experience in time-series or spatio-temporal analysis, preferably using Bayesian integrated nested Laplace approximation (INLA)
  • Experience applying machine learning methods, e.g. using extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and an interest in learning natural language processing (NLP)
  • Proven interest in environmental microbiology, environmental health/one health/planetary health, systems thinking and a strong commitment to produce science for policy impact
  • Experience in bioinformatics analysing metagenomes (taxa and functional genes) is an advantage
  • Experience in extracting environemntal data from remote sensing products is an advantage
  • Field work experience in sampling of environmental samples is an advantage
  • Lab work experience in environmental microbiology is an advantage
  • proven track record of ability to produce scientific writing in the form of publications

Remuneration is based on Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L.
