We are looking for outstanding and highly motivated PhD student for the BMWi funded project InnoKA, which is a joint project between the Chair of Technical Electrochemistry at TUM (www.tec.ch.tum.de), Greenerity GmbH (http://www.greenerity.com), and the Center for Electron Microscopy at the Technical University of Berlin (ZELMI, http://www.zelmi.tu-berlin.de). The position is at the Chair of Technical Electrochemistry under supervision of Dr. Hany El-Sayed and Prof. Hubert Gasteiger. The focus of the announced PhD position will be on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured carbon-supported electrocatalysts for PEM fuel cells.

Candidate profile:
We are looking for an excellent and enthusiastic student with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant disciplines. Research experience in catalyst synthesis and/or electrochemistry is required, and experience in surface science and material characterization techniques is desirable but not essential. The candidate should have at least a professional working proficiency in English with strong communication skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. We aim at research at the highest international level and candidates who fit into this environment are welcome. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong publication record.
Topic/Method:
Your tasks include, but not limited to:
• The development of new carbon nanostructures for the use as catalysts supports.
• Modification of carbon materials for enhanced carbon corrosion resistance in fuel cell environment.
• Development of oxide-coated carbon structures as supports for the anode side of PEM fuel cell.
• Morphological and electrochemical characterization (half-cell level) of the developed catalysts and catalyst supports.
• Preparation of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for PEM fuel cell testing in collaboration with other members of the fuel cell team.

Additional Information:
• Start: August/September 2017
• Project duration: 3 years
• TV-L E13 (65% in the first year)

Persons with disabilities will be preferred in case of equal qualification. TUM aims at a higher proportion of women. Applications from women are therefore explicitly welcome.
