Job description:PhD Student (f/m/d) Magnetically assisted Solvent Extraction of rare earths in variable gravitational fields

With cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, around 1,500 employees from more than 70 nations at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) are committed to mastering the great challenges facing society today.

The Institute of Fluid Dynamics is conducting basic and applied research in the fields of thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in order to improve the sustainability, the energy efficiency and the safety of industrial processes.

The Group Electromagnetic separation is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Magnetically assisted Solvent Extraction of rare earths in variable gravitational fields. 

This position is financially supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with funds provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) due to an enactment of the German Bundestag under Grant No. DLR 50WM2359 (Magsolex II).


Your tasks

# Conduct rare-earth solvent extraction experiments, cf. project description, with tailored magnetic field
# Laser Interferometry, PIV experiments to measure space- and time- resolved scalar transfer during rare-earth extraction/stripping with/without magnetic fields
# Prepare, drafting safety document (ESDP) and perform experiment on the project planned parabolic campaign around 2026
# Publicity of research results, i.e. in conferences, peer reviewed publications, seminars etc.
# Prepare oneself as a qualified PhD candidate (f/m/d) at/before the end of the project period with a well scheduled finishing plan towards a well-written dissertation to be defended
# Other project related works


Your profile

# Completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in the field of Chemical Engineering, Mechanic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field
# Basic chemistry lab skills
# Optical experiment, e.g. laser interferometry, PIV, PTV, ultrasound, spectrometry is a big bonus
# Self-organized working style
# Presentation skill in front of public
# Scientific writing in English
# Capable to work in a team
# English is mandatory, German language skill is a bonus
# Capable of doing basic programming tasks with one language Matlab, Python, C, C++ etc.
